I was checking my Bank of America account online, and I noticed two Student Platinum credit card numbers, I only have one. Also, they sent me a message that just says that they are changing my account number. They have no explanation, thats all they said.

Is that normal? I have nothing to worry, right?

Sounds odd to me that they’re changing your account number. Did you get this message through email, on the phone, or through their online banking website? Can you call the bank to confirm your new account number and find out about that second listed account that you don’t have?

I had this happen once with my USAA credit card. Apparently, some card numbers were compromised and they were issuing new cards to everyone as a precaution. My online account webpage showed both account numbers for several weeks until all charges on the original card had been processed. After that, only the new card number appeared online. I’ll bet this is what has happened with yours.

I got the message through their online banking website. I tried sending message to their customer representative. They told me they can’t discuss the matter through e-mail ; instead, I should call them.

Maybe patsmom is right. It’s not really a big deal. Probably that’s what happened. Maybe I’ll just leave it that way, and wait for a few weeks.

shadowrunner - I think you should call the number on the back of your card, just to make sure. Too many scams these days to just let that go. It probably is nothing to worry about, buy why not make sure with a quick phone call?

I have received phishing emails from what looks to be BofA, but is not. Everything “looks” legit. If you accessed your online account through an email, be very careful. Do NOT give out info through email. Banks already know your info and do NOT need you to give your account number to them.

It doesn’t really sound like what happened to you is phishing. However, I am confused about the account number change. Even when I have been upgraded to higher status (like gold to platinum), I have never received a new account number. I would ask for an explanation & request a written follow up letter, as well, for your files. Just in case …

Okay, I called them. The customer representative said that they periodicly changed account numbers, and I ask her why. She said that there could be a possible merge to another institution (or maybe they already merged), and also to reduce threat of identity fraud. Anyway, she assured me that I will be receiving my new card soon which I should activate, and the old one will be deactivated.

Citibank has occasionally changed out account numbers because they “upgraded” our card to another one, but they sent letters ahead of time to warn us that we were getting this magical upgrade (I don’t see much difference).

Two of the BOA credit acct numbers in this house changed in last 4 months and a couple of other family members have had their’s changed in last month. Letters with new cards and online notice happen about the same time so if letter takes a few days, you will see it online first. You usually have 2-3 months to activate the new acct number and until then, just use old acct as usual. After new acct number is activated, all info will be transferred to new acct number and your credit report will still reflect your original issue date. Once you make a purchase with new acct numbered card, old card can be destroyed.

Bank of America has been changing certain types of credit acct numbers on a rolling basis for a few months now. Good for you for being so diligent and actually noticing this when you went online. Way to protect yourself.

We use BoA for most of our banking. I know there has been some activity with credit cards…our LLBean Visa Card has been “spun” off to another bank. If we want to continue our LLBean benefits (points, free shipping, etc) we must apply for a new card through the “new” bank (I don’t know who it is). But in the meantime BoA has replaced the old LLBean cards with a NEW card, with a NEW account number. Your situation could be somewhat related to this

I see. We don’t have a B of A credit card, only checking account and ATM card. Guess that’s why we haven’t seen any changes in our account numbers.
