<p>how do they know the precise number of students for 2009? surely they haven’t finished reading through applications… have they?</p>

<p>I think the “precise” number is really a “target” number, but I don’t know how they compute the number of acceptances to offer in order to reach the target. According to a letter they recently sent my daughter, they’re still in the process of reading applications. The letter reassured her that they haven’t forgotten all about her since they accepted her; they were just busy with applications.</p>

<p>Well, all they’ve done is decide on a class size of 383. They get a lot more applications than they can handle, so they can determine what their class size will be this year - i.e how many to admit given their yield so that 383 matriculate on May 1.</p>

<p>This is a guessing game as to how many to admit so that they get a class size of 383. The yield has to be factored in.</p>

<p>For the class size, I think they aim for a slightly lower number, and then admit some people from the waiting list.</p>

<p>The April Fools prank last year was that all 650 or so admitted students decided to matriculate…</p>
