Pandemic was given to my Med student nephew. It’s more involved but they seem to enjoy it. Bananagrams is quick and easy but not a formal board game.
Betrayal at House on the Hill. I got my 19 year old D a copy to take to university and it was popular in her dorm. This old parent and her 12 year old brother love it too.
Thanks; just ordered Code Names.
It varies tremendously on what types of games the group likes. Check out https://boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame for some ideas. My favorite is Dominion. Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 is probably the highest rated board game of all time. Future games are influenced by what happened past games, so it works best if you have the same group of ~4 players that does the full season together.
Catch Phrase was quite popular with the younger crowd at work. Kind of modernized password.
Taboo is pretty fun and works well with a lot of people. The Resistance is more involved and works great as a quick party game. King of New York is my other go to game for board game meet-ups.
I second Pandemic, which is a nice cooperative game (competition can kill a party mood).
It’s much longer than a typical party game and is best suited for a board game night, but my friends and I have had a blast with Mansions of Madness (2nd edition with the app).
Just ordered 2, great thread!
Catch phrase is a lot of fun. Modern day password meets “time bomb”. That is if any of you are old enough to remember the “Time Bomb” game
@“Cardinal Fang”, I know the guy who invented Snake Oil.
A game we adore is called “It Was a Dark & Stormy Night”. It is guessing book titles from the first line of the book. I realize it might not appeal to every crowd, but our tribe lives it.
Sequence
We’ve always liked Scattegories too.
I have discovered after playing a lot of board and card games that I do not really like cooperative games like Pandemic or Scotland Yard, inevitably the smartest person takes over and everyone else just does what he tells you to. I also do not like Mafia (the card game) type games. (So I hate The Resistance.)
Things I really do like:
Dominion - it’s a deck building type game, but with lots of variations. Every time you play depending on which selection of cards you have the strategy is different. The expansion packs really improve the game, but the original set is still great. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/36218/dominion
Small World - Like Risk only more fun. It won’t take you all day to play. Fantasy world and creatures. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/40692/small-world
Sushi Go - great card game. You pass around cards trying to create sets that will generate the maximum number of points. The cards are adorable. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/133473/sushi-go
Tokaido - Journey through Japan collecting experiences https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/123540/tokaido
If you are interested in discovering new board games and getting a sense of how they play watching Wil Wheaton’s (Wesley Crusher from Star Trek Next Gen) Tabletop shows on youtube is a good way to do it.
Code Names is pretty good.

My physicsy kid loves, loves, loves Resistance. Played it incessantly in college. Is sad that no one in grad school seems interested, even when they have game nights. Won’t play it at home, says her sister is too nice and would get creamed. There may be something to your reason for hating it…
@mathmom Now I have to buy Tokaido.
@Muad_dib Now I have to buy Machi Koro
Also DS1 is getting Japanese the game but that is educational

^Looks like the core deck for Japanese has just sold out though
@mathmom our family loves Sushi Go! I bought it for my son last Christmas and we got addicted to it over the holidays and play it every time we are all together. He loves everything related to Japan (he learned Japanese in college and studied abroad there). The rest of us also fell in love with Japan when we visited him there. I am definitely going to check out both Tokaido and Machi Koro. I already bought a game called Kodama as a gift for my son this year. Has anyone ever played that? The reviews on Amazon were quite good.
Oh, and we also love Dominion!
@Mom2jl Now I have to buy Kodama! I might PM you when DS1 goes to Japan to study abroad.
The base Machi Koro game is kind of like a super simple version of Dominion, with the same kingdom cards in every game. There are ~4 buying strategies that appear decent, and after a couple games, it will likely be obvious which of those strategies is the best one. With it’s simplicit,y even small children will have no problem with Machi Koro. However, if you are looking for something with more complex Dominion-like strategies, you’ll probably be disappointed.
Our family recently got Codenames and it is a hit. More complicated than it looks. I learned something from this game: people really don’t think alike! We also like Picwits (non -competitive/good for bigger groups, mixed ages), Catch Phrase, and good old Boggle.
