What effect does this have on college admissions? What if my grades are really bad for my current sophomore year? Will top boarding schools still accept me if I had better grades during my freshmen year? I’m an international student with a 3.3 GPA during my freshmen year. Currently, my sophomore year GPA is about a 2.0 and is getting worse. I’m planning on applying to boarding schools as a repeat sophomore and my parents are willing to pay till $36000. Could you advise me on which boarding schools to apply for and if I still have a chance?

BUMP pls anyone?

“Repeating” at a BS is not viewed negatively for college admissions.

It would be viewed positively if you had poor grades in your freshmen year and now showed improvement in your sophomore year. But your situation of declining academic performance would likely be viewed negatively and would call into question your ability to succeed in a rigorous BS environment.

The top BS are expensive and have boarding tuition near $50,000. It is rare for int’l students to qualify for FA. Even a domestic student with a 2.0 GPA cannot realistically expect to be awarded FA, let alone be admitted into a top school.

So the viable option is to apply as a full-pay applicant. To search for BS tuition that fits your family’s $36,000 budget, try:

Besides additional school fees, attending a BS in a foreign country involves a lot of expenses besides the tuition. The schools generally have 3 breaks during the academic year during which the dorms are closed and the students must leave:
- Thanksgiving Break (right now)
- Winter Break
- Spring Break

Plus there are 2 parent weekends for the parents to visit the school and meet with the teachers. The travel/hotel /rental car costs can be substantial. So if $36,000 is the absolute maximum your family can spend, then you must subtract the amount for the extra costs.

BTW, it is not necessary to BUMP your thread in just an hour. It is Thanksgiving Day today in the U.S., a national holiday. People are just waking up now.
