I’m not sure where you got the impression that the essays need to be funny and lighthearted! They do not. In fact they do not have to be any particular way. What they need to be is well-written and substantive (that is, answer the prompt, and say something).
The essay doesn’t need to be lighthearted, it needs do be interesting and well written! If you need tips or help reviewing them, I loveeeeee editing and reading essays. Good luck!
Essays don’t need to be lighthearted, neither does it need to be heavy. I think the best advice someone ever told me was to write a essay that no one else can think of since it’ll stick out to the AO since its unique. I know theres some kids who wrote about the Teletubbies and got in because the AO was a fan too.
The important thing about your essays is that they reflect you. If someone you knew well picked it up and read it, they should be able to know it’s yours.
Serious, light-hearted, funny… doesn’t matter. While memorable is great to strive for, authenticity matters more.
Agree with the above, but I would also add be true to your writing style. Trying to write in a way that is not genuine to you or your story will must likely miss the mark. Tell the story, your story, in the voice that best showcases it and you.
