Boarding your dog

Who do you use, and how much do you pay?

I use a local kennel and pay $18 a night for a medium size dog. I was blown away recently when I had to pay $35 a night (out of state). Ouch.

$25 per day. It is a private home in the country. The dogs are treated like their own pets. It is worth every penny. I wish it wasn’t 50 miles away…

We share pet care with our wonderful neighbors.

@hrh19 thats what Im paying at a private home and I wondered if it was a good price. Im always leery of kennels because you never know if they keep them locked up most of the time, or they pick up kennel cough. My dog is a poodle, and he is not social which is another reason why I dont think a kennel would be a good fit. The couple that keeps him have two cockerspaniels and seems to like them. They have a fenced in yard, so he gets quite a bit of excercise. I cant let him loose at our house even if I activate the invisible fence left by the previous owners. There are coyotes, and hawks in the area.

Usually our in-laws watch her but when they can’t, we found a wonderful home through dogvacay.com and she charges $25 a night. She even sends us pictures of our furbaby a few times a day

Whoa… I thought we were getting a good deal - I think we are compared to some parts of the country as Ds both pay more than we do for overnighters. We pay $55/night ($45/day), but he picks up and drops off, which, when you’re traveling, is a HUGE time and worry savings. He was also our trainer when the good lookin’ fella to your left was a mere pup, so I trust that he is very attuned to dogs and their behaviors. I know he is not crated when he is there, and in fact, sleeps with the sitter in his bed. He also has a HUGE fenced-in backyard, which is a nice perk now that we have moved to condo living.

$55 a night for crate free boarding. Dogs stay in a house with multiple employees. They can sleep in a crate, dog bed, couch or human bed. Our rescue is still a bit skittish and hates being crated or being in a dog run so this option is worth the cost for us.

The place where we take our dog charges $48/day for a 4x8 indoor/outdoor kennel. (it’s in exurban DC, 20 min north of us). A contained indoor kennel is $36, so the extra space and indoor/outdoor option is worth the difference. She’s a shy girl and is anxious in storms, but these folks love her to death, so the cost is worth it to keep her content.

We also have a friend who took her home to Toledo while we were on a three-week trip. She took Kira on a number of nature walk events in the city parks, and the dog earned a free tshirt!

I will be leaving mine with the vet (17$ a night) instead of the doggy-daycare place ($30 per night), because he has bitten badly… Though not in the last 2 months. He was a rescue dog, and it took us awhile to become pack leaders and take him down a notch… Plus he is still in his adolescent years. It breaks my heart to think of him in a cage, only being taken out to pee/poo 3 times a day, but none of the doggy-daycare places will take dogs who have been “aggressive” and I can’t risk him biting someone in a home based dog care situation. The vet knows he has bitten and have been warned.
Any ideas of what I can do? I figure once he has gone 6 months without biting, I will be able to truthfully say that he doesn’t bite!

@CountingDown , I know exactly the line of tshirts you are talking about - we have MANY of them in our home. Hope your pup enjoyed our city!

I use a private home I found through Rover.com. Pay $30 per night, and it is worth it! I have a cockapoo, and he needs a lot of human company.

A friend of mine uses an at-home service, and it’s $65/day here. Now that S2 is living at home again, we have left the dog with him when DH and I are traveling. It works out well – she’s on her home turf and S2 has a companion (and chick magnet).

Abasket, she even went to the night sky viewing! She had a great time. Our friend loves Kira to death and anyone who takes her for long walks is a friend forever.

One of the nice things about dogvacay (I can’t speak to other sites) is that you can find the specific criteria you’re looking for- people that are 1-pet only people (there a few!), people that run basically a doggie hotel (that’s my dog’s jam), people that crate, people that let them sleep in their beds with them, and so on.

My dog is a total lover- to the point that she gets anxious if there’s not a human in the room as her at all times. She is also a lap dog (well, she thinks she is at least…). So we found one perfect for her even though it’s a little bit away. Our in-law’s dog goes there too if we are both going to be out of town at the same time (so the two dogs go together and we get a discount).

On the other hand, we have a retired neighbor a few doors down who does one dog at a time through dogvacay because that is what she can handle (she can’t walk multiple dogs due to physical limitations). She loves it because it allows her to be around dogs quite often but without the complete responsibility of having one full time (she travels quite a bit).

Good luck

Wow I guess I shouldnt complain. I thought $30/night was too much! I got them to charge $25/night for my upcoming trip because I’ve used them so much this year and I’ve been with them for 8 years. I can’t imagine the prices some in here are paying.

One of my friends just started doing dogvacay. So far she really likes it. She has one dog, and she has fostered dogs–so she is used to having a second around on a short-term basis. She likes the chance for her dog to socialize, and she really likes how much you are able to pick and choose (from both sides). She insists on a meet and greet with her dog first.

We have used an in-home type place in the past, which we loved (they post tons of pics on FB). It was $25-35 per day per dog (more on weekends). We have 3 dogs now so it has worked out better to pay someone to come here. Both for cost reasons, and I’m not sure how well our newest addition would do with the in-home place and the large number of dogs there. We’ve only ever gone away for a long weekend since we got the 3rd. For more than 2-3 days I would probably want someone to stay here. My daugther’s BFF is staying in town for college so it has occurred to me that I could hit her up. She loves animals and they all know her.

My dog goes to a doggy sleepover camp. It’s a private home on a small farm. The owner hosts several dogs at a time. She groups them by personality, and the groups rotate locations (upstairs, downstairs, yard 1, yard 2) throughout the day. Clyde comes home tired from all the playtime, and a tired Clyde is a good Clyde! He also comes home with better manners, because the sitter has high expectations for dog manners and will enforce/train as necessary. Most of her visitors are repeat customers of many years.

She charges $20 a day. I always pay $25-$30 a day, because she is worth it.

@Mommertons, what is the general location of your doggy sleepover camp? I would be willing to travel a considerable distance for a treasure like that.

We are outside of Portland,OR.

Oh darn, that’s a bit too far as I’m in the mid-Atlantic. :frowning:
