Bobby Flay and His Cat

Any cat owners see the CBS TV feature on Bobby Flay’s cat?

It quite a beautiful creature and seems to be Bobby’s constant companion these days. Flay said something that I have heard before; that there are more cats in the USA than dogs. Then why do cats get so little love in popular culture?

“Then why do cats get so little love in popular culture?”

Because cats don’t kiss butt.

Bc cats Have defined tastes and do not slobber all over just anyone to get petted!! Lol
Beautiful huge cat he has!

I love those Maine Coons…they truly are big, big cats. We had a pretty big muscle bound male cat a decade or so ago who was dwarfed by the neighbor’s Maine Coon. We have both a medium sized cat and a large dog. They are infinitely different with both positives and negatives for sure. .

Gorgeous cat! But 20 pounds - goodness!

Thanks for sharing this. Two of my coworkers own kittens (siblings) that I think are Maine coon cats. The kittens are gorgeous.

I was just reading up on Maine Coon cats and I guess it is true that they are dog-like, cuddly, and affectionate.

Found this description:
““The dogs of the cat world.” That’s the nickname Maine Coons have earned because they enjoy the company of people. Also called “gentle giants,” Maine Coons are big, gentle, intelligent, good-natured goofs who remain kittenish throughout their lives.”

Sounds like a fun breed.

I never understood that growing up or even to some extent now. I find them to be fun and congenial beings.

Never found this to be the case with most cats I’ve met…including street cats. Most, including some who would normally be wary of most strangers tend to warm up to me right away.

On the other hand, I tend to be very wary of small dogs while feeling very comfortable around German Shepards and other large dogs.

I have two Maine Coons. They are in some ways very dog-like, when we come home they run to the door, they sleep with us. But they definitely have to pick you. You have to earn their love and trust. But these are the two sweetest, smartest cats we’ve ever owned. They are big, solid cats. I don’t realize how big they are until I see other cats and they seem so small.

My FIL does not like cats. He’s not allergic or anything he just doesn’t like them. But the funniest thing happens whenever he goes to a home with cats. It’s like the cats are magnetized to him. We always get a big laugh when house cats migrate to him, rub against his leg, try to sit on his lap, etc. Watching his face and reaction is priceless. Anyone else see this happen? Maybe he’s giving off some chemical signal. Who knows? But very funny.

We have always noticed our cats go to the people who don’t like cats. I don’t know why it happens, but it’s hilarious every time.

@STEM2017, our cats always did that to my grandfather, who for some reason, was terrified of cats. They would jump onto his lap, and he would freeze, saying, “please get it off me, please get it off me.”

Someone suggested that people who don’t want cats near them avoid eye contact. Some cats find eye contact from strangers threatening, so they like the ones who won’t look at them.

I don’t understand how anyone cannot like cats. They’re funny as hell, intelligent (most of the time), and fully potty trained right from the factory.

One of my favorite singers is an unabashed cat lover. Recently he was interviewed and mentioned that he is very happy in a relationship with a woman he reconnected with from high school. He said “We live together now and have cats.”

Absolutely love Maine Coons,… the bigger and wilder-looking, the better… If I didn’t have such a penchant for strays and rescues I would get one (though I do look into the Maine Coon category on Petfinder from time to time. )

I do have a formerly feral boy who seems to have a lot of Maine Coon in him…really most of the traits, if not all. He is a gorgeous, fluffball…a pale yellow gentle giant complete with ear tufts and paw tufts and a Buddha-like nature.

I was a confirmed cat person most of my life…dogs were just meh…until I got a dog. Then another. Now I adore all my fur babies, now down to two cats and two dogs. (One of my cats was very dog-like, and when young, would roll and wrestle every day with my dog. ) Would love to add a border collie, a mini-goat, a donkey and a gypsy vanner horse to the mix but alas, I only have about 1/8 of an acre!

@inthegarden Maybe you should move to an Ark.

I think people pretend to not like cats, it is like when you were in high school and liked some form of music that wasn’t ‘cool’, so when with other people you publicly disdained the group/genre, but in secret listened to it:). Funny part is people complain about the supposedly bad things cats do (or things they don’t do), but totally ignore what dogs can do (and being someone who certifiably loves both species, not knocking either of them), like dogs and shoes, dogs chewing on furniture, having acccidents, etc. I think for some people the fact that cats don’t massage the ego the way a dog does is irking, they are their own creature and always have been. Dogs came into contact with man because of their attraction as wolves to the bones and such left from what man was eating, and over time they adapated themselves to man, kind of ‘sucked up’ to them (obviously, man bred them as well), whereas cats from what I can tell showed up one day, and said “okay, I’ll come live with you, you feed me, admire me, and if I feel like it I might let you pet me”. Cats are still a lot more wild then dogs, too.

George Carlin had a great routine about that, went something like this

"Ever notice the difference between dogs and cats? You go out to get the mail, or you are away for several days, and the dog greets you with “oh, boss, I missed you so, you were gone so long, I can’t believe your back, love me, love me, love me” whereas with a cat you can be off fighting the wars for years, you walk in, the cat is asleep on the couch, opens one eye and in effect says “oh, its you, didn’t really notice you were gone” then close its eyes and go back to sleep:)

For the first time in my life we’re cat-free (have been since last July). I like cats, but I can’t do litter boxes any more. Just can’t. The girls are both going off to college soon, and the younger one became allergic to cats about 5 years ago (so is enjoying the ability to breathe through her nose better since last July when our cat passed from old age/cancer).

I always thought Maine Coon cats were super mean, because my MIL favored them. Then she got a rescue a few years ago that was just a regular fluffy cat, and we figured out that she makes all of her cats mean, and enjoys it when they come up to you and bite and scratch you. She’ll say “they only love me” (which is true-they only do that to others).

I think my older daughter will rescue a cat as soon as she’s living in an apartment and able to take care of one. The younger one is definitely a dog person (we also have dogs).

On YouTube there is a couple named the Wynns, they have a rescue cat named Singa who is an exotic breed. He’s super gregarious and dog-like, and lives on their catamaran with them. He’s one cool cat.

^ Hey, @STEM2017 , I’ll have to give that one some serious thought! But then I’d be much too busy to get onto CC with all you fine folks

Not a cat person here. I love my Australian shepherd.
