My daughter has to complete the body fat testing per a letter received a few days ago. The letter says to have the school nurse do the measurements and fill in the form as indicated. Since school is closed this week and we want to complete as soon as possible, could I have this done at her doctor’s office? Or should she call the phone number on the letter to get their permission first? Please advise. I don’t want to sound like a ninny-but I know sometimes it’s all about the instructions. Thanks!

RReed4202 - I would think that the doctor’s office nurse could do the measurements, but the only way to be sure is to call the number on the letter and check. Good luck with everything.

A great place to ask those types of questions is on West-Point.org’s “Prospective Net”. Any parent, interested student or cadet candidate (accepted, waiting, waiting list, etc.) can subscribe. The moderators for the forum are either WP parents or connected to the admissions process in their state.

After R day, all the parents on Prospective Net can be subscribed to Plebe Net, a very, very active parent email listserve, then at the end of Plebe Year, they become members of the large Parent Forum listserve.

For example this weekend, the listserves are active, following cadet travel issues as cadets return from the long pass weekend.

Prospective Net will become more and more active as we get closer to R Day.

Thanks to both of you…I will purpose the question to the prospective.net group.

I’m a HS Junior connected to Prospective-Net. West Point prospective candidates and their parents should really use the folks hooked up on that list. I have found it to be the best place to get questions answered. Oh, well… I just got your question through Prospective-Net. Welcome aboard, you’ve made a good move.

Thanks-I look forward to their reply!

Prosective.net is a great resource, as is this site, but for specific questions related to a specific candidate my advise would be to to call or e-mail the WP admissions department directly. That way you know that the information you are given is correct.

What exactly is the body fat test?

A body fat test estimates % body fat from height weight and various body circumference measurements to make sure that a person falls within the allowed limits.

A description of the tape test can be found in the Army Weight Control Program.

“Maintaining desirable body composition is an integral part of physical fitness, general health, and military appearance. Service members whose duties require muscular and cardio-respiratory endurance may be hampered in performing their duties when body fat exceeds 26 percent in males and 36 percent in females. The Military Services shall implement body composition programs that enhance general health, physical fitness and military appearance. Departments must ensure that actual weight loss is viewed as less important than the reduction in body fat.”
