It’s the terror of knowing you are going down and dying in a horrific way, when you might have had control of not being in one of these planes, right? . When you get in your car we don’t feel a terror of a car crash, it just happens . Agree about the statistics.
That’s right, 737 Max 9
I’m booked on a SW flight on Friday. Yesterday when I got online to figure out what kind of plane I would be on, a notification popped up saying I could change my flight to anytime in the next two weeks without paying anything extra. No specific explanation was given other than something along the lines of “circumstances beyond our control (weather, etc.) may affect our operations on your flights.” When I called this morning to get more information, the agent told me that because of customer concerns about the 737 Max 8, they were offering anyone with a reservation in the next week a one-time opportunity to change their flight without charging for the fare difference. My plane is scheduled to be a 737-700, by the way, so I won’t be changing my flight. On the routes I usually fly, I’ve either been on the 737-700 or 737-800, but never on the Max 8.
Car crashes are mostly caused by humans, not car malfunctions. As good drivers, we also have some degree of control in our cars, unlike on an airplane. The fear of being out-of-control is terrifying.
Think about the guilt if the plane went down with your kid on it. Just has a supremely unsatisfying concert with Allianz about kid’s travel insurance, and coverage if her flight is grounded for a ticket on a different airline. Grrr… X(
And Germany just closed their airspace to them.
And most car crashes you walk away from. You don’t walk away from a plane falling out of the sky. I’ll bet on myself, not some stats.
^But 102 people a DAY die in the US in car crashes. It happens a lot! That’s almost one plane crash DAILY.
Oh, well, I’m just an engineer and DO think about stats. I would fly on the plane tomorrow without a second thought.
Does Alitalia Fly this plane?
I have a southwest flight with S for a college visit Thursday on a Max 8. Southwest is offering free changes, but this was the most convenient option. I can’t decide whether to change or stick with the current flight expecting the max 8 planes to be grounded by then anyway, just from public pressure.
The other problem is flooding risk in the area we are flying into, a three hour drive from airport to college, and my son’s indecisiveness over whether he would actually attend this college or if it’s just too far out, logistically and in other respects. Hard to know without visiting, but this visit is stressful making me anxious.
Here you go:
@MaineLonghorn The stat that caught my attention further up in this discussion is that there are only 350 of these planes in service. 2 have crashed in what appear to be similar circumstances. Yes, there are a lot of flights on those planes, but 2 planes out of 350 almost brand new planes is a concern to me.
I’m getting ready to make a SW reservation from Hartford to Atlanta…via Baltimore. This is for May. Should I be checking the plane types…they have not usually been this model.
Maybe I should just fly delta.
Also going to Cleveland in April…via Baltimore…again not usually this plane type.
Is this plane typically used for longer flights?
^^There is nothing in the Times article that says it is a hardware (the aircraft itself) issue. It is the control system that is being under scrutiny.
Two completely different issues. The former is a complete grounder. The latter is fixable.
@yourmomma - is it a design flaw or a software problem (or both)?
@intparent, it looks as if groundings are increasing by the hour…I hope for you that your kids’ flight gets changed ASAP. Is it a school trip? Leaving Saturday? (That’s when my DS leaves on his, but it’s not airlines that use this plane).
hysterical lemmings
It is our family spring break trip to Paris. We are flying from different cities, so not the same flight. I need to decide whether to rebook her. Yes, leaving Saturday. I have travel insurance for her — unclear what coverage we will have, but I’ve made peace with paying what I have to without it.
France has joined the list of countries banning that type plane from their airspace.
There you go, intparent!
@larssc , international hysteria might divert another disaster.
