"…or he could be gullible young kid with no real authoritative figure around to properly guide him."

And, maybe, exposed to too many disgustingly violent video games or movies and thought: ‘Looks like fun – why not?’ Oops, there goes freedom of speech!

“Yes, and we now are quite clear on the fact that Loughner was apolitical, never watch news and never even saw the Palin flyer. He a nut who was way too influenced by the nutty leftists Zeitgeist movie.”

Love how you say he was apolitical but in the next sentence declare he was "way too influenced by a “nutty leftist” movie. LOL What else can I say?

About any connections KO or anyone made - did they urge killing Tea Partiers? Deporting all of them? How many people said such crazy things, if any? Mainstream politicians or commentators? I see a high number of high profile people saying disgusting, crazy things about Muslims or immigrants.

Omg! Just woke up and catching up with the news. Didn’t the first bomb explode right under the flag of the Russian Federation? I could wrong, but it sort of looked like that in the initial videos.

I don’t think that you would if it were only in your home. But if you don’t generally feel safe, wouldn’t you carry it with you? Or are we talking about rifles here?

“And, maybe, exposed to too many disgustingly violent video games or movies and thought: ‘Looks like fun – why not?’ Oops, there goes freedom of speech!”

Why do you keep going there egging to debate gun control? You want to have this thread shut down?

You know have to share an ideology or be politically active to be influenced by a movie which does have an ideology. Thought that was kind of obvious.

And the thought process involved between Sandy Hook:Gun Owners Gifford:Tea Party and Marathon:Immigrants is exactly the same. Just because you personally havent noted the same degree of proposed solution is meaningless.

We see college students coming on CC in the College Life and Parent Forums feeling very lonely and isolated and that can happen on a college campus and there are times when we worry that they might hurt themselves. Rarely do students hurt others though but I sometimes think that the incredible loneliness and sometimes anger help to fuel these very rare events. I also wonder if this student posted on CC.

Good god, BC, are we still in the Old West?! Glad I learned to be quick on the draw as a youngster, but I don’t know about these current generations. Wasn’t playing with guns banned for boys about 20-30 years ago?!

any recent word on “other” suspects in the Boston area? I thought there was something about at least one guy stripped down and put in a police car?

I think zoosermom got this one correct when she noted way, way, way earlier that domestic v. foreign may not be a clear line when a 19 year old has been in the US since he was 9 and may have a separtist political agenda. Was he lashing out for nationalistic reasons or religious or something else or in addition?

I wish some of us could settle down a bit. The tension level in this thread has really skyrocketed in the last few pages, and nobody needs any help feeling tense right now. I have been using this thread to get more info than I can find in my usual sources and I would be sad if it got closed because we had to take our tensions out on each other.

My daughter and wife had the same training. My wife had firearms training when she was a lot younger too. It might have been mandatory in school.

There were kids as young as nine too. It was a very safe environment.

I’ll defend Twitter and Skolnik some. His info off scanners was better than anything else at the time and gave me enuff to conclude they were who we know they now are. Obviously many errors were made including the cops having 2 innocent folks in custody for a time. But I think he did some good work too. Very fluid situation last night.

From those interviewed who knew the young men in their everyday encounters, there seem to be no flags that they could/would get involved and do such things. I wonder if there are others involved as well. What on earth could get two brothers who seem to be doing just fine to do something like this? I cannot even begin to fathom this.

The uncle did not say why they had no contact with these two brothers for years, saying it was ‘personal’. Translation: he doesn’t want to disclose it.

I do agree with Zmom (or what I read into her words) that some of us, depending on where we are, where we grew up, and other influences, will respond differently to perceived threats. Some hunker down, some proceed with caution, some get to a different level of self-defense. There is no one right response, choices will vary. For this thread, can we leave it at that or near?

Has there been any news about the parents ? I heard several interviews with younger boy’s classmates and parents of classmates, but haven’t heard anything about their parents?
