Bone Density- Seeking Info from Y'All!!

Hopefully your plan has a prescription max and you will hit it in a few months.

OK very helpful info @MomofWildChild -
I called my insurance and they have a $35 copay if mailed. Will try it that way - comes in a cooler and holds for 8 hrs with UPS delivery set up with me at home, hope it works .
This is very helpful information for all getting this med. (I got a travel pack from endo doc.)
Local pharmacy and mail order are significantly different in price, I am now learning. I hope this helps others.

Wow–huge difference between $35 copay vs several hundred! Good to know for those of us at risk of low bone density, like me!

The mailing of the Forteo works fine. The ice packs they use last forever. I’ve received it that way before. I’m glad you got the price down so much! I will tell you that I thought I had the mail delivery deal through my plan but they basically backed out on me since they consider it a “specialty medicine”. That’s why I had to do the specialty pharmacy (Briova) scholarship thing. I hope that doesn’t happen to you. It’s all a process…

Specialty drugs are a special sort of hell…D was on daily shots of growth hormone for 13 years. We’ve been through gads of specialty pharmacies over the years. I’m just chiming in to say the Lilly/UPS combo never failed us. The drugs are very well packed in styrofoam coolers with ice packs.

Many biotech reagents are shipped on ice or even on dry ice! Pharma knows this shipping business very, very well.

Such a learning curve- I will stay on it to be sure all goes well.

So far so good. The delivery was very good. I think Lilly has UPS hopping. Caremark told me if I did not receive it by 7PM I should call them. They came at 650PM. So far looks like cost is $35. My endocrinologist is retiring. Darn. I can and will go back to family practice doctor. Got a puppy and now I am climbing stairs a lot and doing things constantly and taking her on walks, etc. My new additional osteo treatment!

I finished my Forteo on Friday! Yay. My scan will be in May.

MOWC, I’m eager to hear how it goes.

Resurrecting this thread.

I had my dexa scan on 4/29 and my endo appointment today (5/9). In the two years since my last scan, things have gotten worse. My endo wants me to go on Prolia, which is just a shot in her office every six months. I’m fine with that – though, of course, if anyone here has any experience, I’d like to hear it. I could have sworn she told me a while ago that she’d put me on Forteo, but when I asked her about it, she said my T scores aren’t yet bad enough, and that she doesn’t expect – with all we’re doing – that they ever will be. (She said my T score should be at least -3.5 before she’d recommend Forteo.)

She took some blood to measure various things like kidney function, and once she calls with the results, I’ll go in for the first shot.

Thanks for checking in. I think Prolia is the next step for me if I haven’t improved enough from the Forteo. I get my dexa scan next week.

Endo wanted my 86 year old mother to start forteo- she opted for prolia and had first shot about three weeks ago.
Calcium levels must be normal to start .
She received three pages of possible side effects printed from the drug insert info.
Good luck to all- you are much younger than my mother ;(

She signed acknowledgement that shot costs $1200 and she may have to pay co- pay- however her gap plan f should cover it all

The shot costs $1200? Wow. Well, that’s probably cheaper than Forteo.

Still on forteo since Feb. the pay is $35 monthly but the shot is like $2400 monthly .

Yeah- if I can’t get coverage or some freebies on the shot, I won’t do it.

MOWC, aren’t you almost through with your two years of Forteo?

I had 19 months since I did 6months in 2007 and I finished about 6 weeks ago. Nice to be done!

When is your next scan?

Next week
