So daughter just called me on the way home from school. GC told her that he had received all her recs from teachers and had sent out the remaining applications yesterday. Then he mentioned the recommendation of Mr. “Smith.” She was confuzzled and said “I didn’t ask Mr. Smith for a rec.” The GC told her that Mr. Smith had come to him with a recommendation that was the most beautiful recommendation he’d read in his 40+ years as a GC. My daughter was deeply touched, as was I. I’m not sure what it was about that conversation that made it hit home to me that my Precious Girl is almost grown and will be leaving home in less than a year, but it literally took my breath away and my knees went weak. I’ve been sitting here sobbing from my gut for the last 20 minutes. Does this get easier as the process goes along because I’m not sure I can cope.

ZM, it gets easier for the students. :D

PS Congrats
PPS You’ll be fine. You’ll be fine.

Thanks Xiggi. I bet your parents are very proud of you.

zoosermom,
I wish I could tell you it gets easier. We had a similar experience last year when my son receive tw o amazing unsolited recommendations from professors at local universities. I still cry when I read them.
though it hasn’t gotten easier for me (maybe it feels that way since my DS has not even been away for 3 weeks yet) I have managed to cope, though without CC I dont’ know what I would have done. There’s a great group of people that come here and cry together and celebrate our children as they are launched on this next step of their journey.
congrats.

Now to hope that the admissions committee will read them…

Wow, I’d cry too. Heck I’m almost crying now and it’s not my child LOL. Congratulations zoosermom and remember they are tears of joy. These are the moments to savor.

Thank you PrimetimeMom. Maybe I’m just wallowing today because I just offered to buy her a BMW if she swears never to leave me.

I’m with PrimetimeMom, zooser. S’ hs Music Director wrote an unsolicited rec; I don’t think it was really used much as it was “extra” and from a non-core-academic course. I think maybe the GC excerpted from it in her rec. But, he sent us a copy and I tell you it made my day, week, year. Tears of joy, like PtMom says.

leaves to go see where I put that letter… and get some kleenex

zm -
Your message went right to the heart… As berurah would say, awwwwww… Those kinds of recommendations WILL get read and I think (but don’t really know) that in my son’s case, made a difference.

That’s wonderful ZM!

Actually, it does get easier – after they’ve spent the summer home between freshman and sophomore year! :(

zoosermom: Sure can relate here too. Last year D was handed copies of the recs that were sent out (with a note from GC, “Keep for future use”). They made my hair stand on end. Each of these individuals took time to point out certain attributes that only a very aware person would have even noticed, and what it made me realize is that there are some very aware folks out there that were guiding my baby woman as she was transitioning. Of course there were others. Too many to count.

Sigh.

Better? I don’t know about “better” but I love the concept of, “a different kind of normal.”

Awwwwwwwwwwww, zm, sweetie, how utterly BEAUTIFUL!!! sniff

(hee hee dig!!)

All I can tell you about this process is THIS…If I can get through it, ANYONE can!!! This year will be a very emotional one for you. There are so many lasts–and firsts. The poignant moments will hit at some of the most unexpected times sigh. But, you WILL make it through, and of course, so will your beautiful, precious, and obviously very well-loved young lady! Hang in there, honey, and congrats to your D on the most lovely and unexpected rec. What a TRULY special gift from a truly special teacher! ~berurah

What a moment to savor! I hope her senior year provides lots of episodes like this.

By the end of next summer, you will likely be ready to make the leap forward (with a lot of tears and steps backward along the way). We miss our son very much, but it’s so gratifying to hear his happiness in his phone calls, and Parents Weekend was a slice of heaven!

Zoos,

That’s soooo nice. Get the kkeenex, because you will find your self crying about a lot of things as your memories come flooding back to your D at a little girl to now as she is on the brink of young adulthood and preparing to leave home for a period that is longer than camp.

Just a note: while I did not offer a BMW (maybe that was the problem), promises of a car didn’t work in my house.

Zoosermom, have you thought about the fact that you may soon be the one carrying a cat around in a baby sling??? (because I suddenly realized that in a little under two years I will be solely in charge of Ds’ two cats–of course I already am in many ways, but still, a scary thought)

"Zoosermom, have you thought about the fact that you may soon be the one carrying a cat around in a baby sling??? "

This made me laugh! Maybe I’ll bond with the cat and become a crazy cat lady! THank you all for your kind words and for listening to me whine.
