I recently received a book award. I’ve written a thank-you note, but I’m not sure who to address it to… the header of the letter that came with the book says “Office of Admission,” but then the letter is signed by the Dean of Admission and the Assistant Dean of Admission. Think I should address it to the individuals, or the admissions office as a whole?

More than likely, it was given to your school by a local alumni representative or a worker at the admissions office. While your desire to send a thank you note is commendable, the award is really the result of anonymous actors – and frankly, who had little to nothing to do with choosing you. Choosing you was done by people at your high school. The college or local college alumni group supplied the book as a part of their ongoing public relations.

What I’m saying is that there is no one connected with the college to really thank.
