Book Club?

Is the CC Book Club still active? If so, how do I join?

I think @mary13 sends out notes, but I don’t belong or read along.

Here’s the latest thread:

Keep reading the thread. After we’ve discussed the book, we decide on the next one. There are no dues and no initiation fee!!

My steps when joining the book club ;):

  1. Lurk
  2. Read the book chosen next (whatever it may be)
  3. Keep an eye on the date
  4. Quit lurking and join in the discussion

Seriously this is by far my favorite book club. The every other month discussion schedule allows plenty of time to read the CC Book Club book in addition to whatever book catches my eye. The online discussion means I can comment whenever (pajamas, anyone?) and wherever (M.D. Anderson Cancer Center while my husband spent the day getting chemo). And, if I don’t quite finish the book on time, I just join in when I do.

Some lurk and join in when a book title interests them. Me? I decided just to go with whatever’s chosen. Yes, I occasionally hit a book I don’t like but interestingly the discussion sometimes makes me like the book more. And when it doesn’t, at least the discussion’s interesting. I particularly like the wide-range of genres and authors the book club has covered. The occasional classic has been particularly good for me. There’s an immense difference between hurriedly reading an assigned classic for school and reading it leisurely for discussion. The book club reads best sellers but we also read books like *The Strangler Vine/i, which I’d never heard of but enjoyed.

I can honestly say the CC Book Club takes care of that problem sometimes with choice of book but always through discussion.

Discussion always begins the 1st of the month in February, April, June, August, October and December!

I’m hoping to read the book for February, haven’t jumped in to the club yet! When will it be announced?

Titles for the next discussion are submitted when the current discussion winds down (think somewhere Dec. 8-10). Any and all can submit titles. When a number of titles make their appearance, then weeding out titles starts - occasionally by veto - but usually @Mary13 has everyone pick their top three or four choices. Anyway a title or two usually appears on most of the lists. Voila the next book gets chosen…

I suggest throwing in your two cents when time comes to choose the next book. If you don’t want to suggest a title, join in picking among the suggested titles for books that interest you. It helps @Mary13 narrow down the chosen book.

You join by reading the book! Did I really suggest The Strangler Vine?

I was part of the original discussion about how CC should have a bookclub and then didn’t join in for a couple of years. I got sucked in when the group picked one of my favorite books, and was so impressed with the level of the conversation, and the ease of being able to discuss the book over the course of a week or two, and the ability to link to related material on the internet, that I haven’t missed a book since. I really like getting out of my comfort zone which is sci fi and fantasy.

Honestly some of the best discussions have been about books I didn’t like that much. Often because they made me see things I hadn’t appreciated on a first read.

Sadly, you did. It was not my cup of tea.

Sorry! Not really mine either!
