book recommendations

Can someone recommend a book on international relations/affairs/business/anything related to international. I’m a high school junior. I’m looking for a good and fun read - not a textbook. fiction or non fiction. Thanks. - sorry for double posting. but I’m kinda desperate finding a book required by a program.

1999: Victory Without War, Nixon, Richard M.; Simon & Schuster 1988.

Extraordinary, Ordinary People: A Memoir of Family by Condoleezza Rice

Tangentially related to international affairs. Talks about her life from birth to Stanford Provost, but talks about her time studying Russian etc

No Higher Honor: A Memoir of My Years in Washington by Condoleezza Rice

More international affairs as it talks about her experience as former National Security Advisor and Secretary of State. I like book #1 better than book #2, but book #2 might fit your requirements better.

Also, if you get them in audiobooks, Rice does the reading of both books. They are great!

Thanks!!..!!!

Madam Secretary by Madeleine Albright.

Albright’s book is very strong.

*The Secretary: A Journey with Hillary Clinton from Beirut to the Heart of American Power * by Kim Ghattas

Published March 5, 2013.

I haven’t read the book, so can’t give my opinion. It did, however catch my eye. I’ve seen good reviews and, then again, some less so.

What do you mean by “strong”?

Thanks! I’ll start with Condi Rice. :)

I’m not sure if you are looking for books specifically about international relations, or if books about issues in foreign countries would also fit the bill. If the latter category is acceptable, I highly recommend Reading Lolita in Tehran, by Azar Nafisi, about the hurdles faced by girls seeking an education in Iran. Let us know if this is the kind of thing you are seeking, because I’m sure we could give you many more enjoyable recommendations.

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

@nottelling, Yes I’m looking for books related to politics and culture in different countries too. I need to read a variety of books for a program related to international relations, not limited to anything specific. So if you have more recommendations, please send them in. Thanks!

but it IS limited to non-fiction.

Dexter Filkins’ Forever War (one of the best books I’ve ever read)
David Halberstam Best and Brightest (although it’s very long)
Tracy Kidder Mountains Beyond Mountains (relief efforts in Haiti)
Strength in What Remains (war in Africa)

I just heard an interview with the author of this book and thought it sounded very interesting:

[‘Angry Days’ Shows An America Torn Over Entering World War II : NPR](<a href=“'Angry Days' Shows An America Torn Over Entering World War II : NPR”>'Angry Days' Shows An America Torn Over Entering World War II : NPR)

[Localizing Transitional Justice: Interventions and Priorities after Mass Violence (Stanford Studies in Human Rights): Rosalind Shaw, Lars Waldorf, Pierre Hazan: 9780804761505: Amazon.com: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Localizing-Transitional-Justice-Interventions-Priorities/dp/0804761507)

International efforts to rebuild Rwanda after the mass genocide. I like the topical books more than the biographies.

@ELY, I also heard that interview and it IS very interesting! Thank you!

My son recommended *Bomb Power: The Modern Presidency and the National Security State *after he took a course on nuclear issues. But it may be too much about how it changed us as opposed to the international angle.

[Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World: Amazon.ca: Tracy Kidder: Books](http://www.amazon.ca/Mountains-Beyond-Quest-Farmer-Would/dp/0812973011)

Highly recommend this book. I think everyone should read it. :)

Dreams of Trespass by Fatema Mernissi, a wonderful memoir about her Moroccan childhood.
