Books and other resources for MT students

See summer program discussion thread. I’m pretty sure this is discussed there. I’m running to a meeting, or I’d look it up. There may be one in CO that accepts older kids. BTP does, as well, but the deadline has passed. OCU has a one week classical music camp that is open to college age students, but their 3 week camp is only for HS (unless that has changed from last year).

If anyone has tried to find The Directory of Theatre Training Programs by clicking on the link on the second post in this thread, it leads to a dead link.

However, it appears that the Dorset Theatre Festival has spun off its directories, which they still publish. The 10th edition is available here:

Good hunting!

Maybe everyone knew this but me, but I was surprised to find Walmart.com has music books and scores, since they don’t carry these items in the stores in my area. I have purchased several of The Singers Musical Theatre Anthology books from their site. The price is usually discounted, shipping costs reasonable, and it always arrives when they say.

are there any good books out there for sight singing or some good vocal warmups that you can play on the piano?

I just (literally 10 minutes ago) finished reading this fabulous book, “'Til the Fat Girl Sings: From an Overweight Nobody to a Broadway Somebody” - by Sharon Wheatley.

For some one who is overweight and wants to make it in this business, this book is a wonderful and very inspirational read. She talks about her whole life as a fat kid, wanting to become an opera singer since she thought she couldn’t get work because she was bigger, to her time in the CCM MT program, to her auditions and subsequent work in three of the biggest shows on Broadway: Les Miz, Phantom, and CATS. It really is an amazing read especially for those of us who don’t fit the ingenue, romantic, or dancer build common in Broadway performers.

Oh my god, that book is amazing! I love it so much… I bought it on a whim this summer and I must have read it at least 5 times by now! So fantastic.

Hi I’m a newbie here. I have a HS junior daughter, been performing since she was 5. I’m looking for books for possible Christmas presents. She’s read Making it on Broadway (great book!) and we just got The Broadway Song Companion. She has done a lot of auditions, but it seems like there are some really good audition books. Which would you recommend -
Audition by Michael Shurtleff
Auditioning for Musical Theatre by Fred Silver
any others?
And is Acting Professionally by Robert Cohen a good choice for her age?

thanks for any suggestions!

Welcome Momster…hope to see you more on the forum.

I don’t know the Cohen book. However, the Silver and Shurtleff books are standard and well thought of for a musical theater performer’s library. We have both and I’d recommend them.

I also personally love Letters to a Young Actor by Brustein. It’s geared towards straight play actors, but the lessons taught in it are things I’ve been able to apply as an MT’er.

Chrisnoo, my D LOVES that book, which was given to her by a director as a gift when the show finished its run. It’s a wonderful read, even for the parent of an aspiring actor!

A colleague at Wright State (Joe Deer) just sent me a link to what appears to be an incredible new resource:

www.bluegobo.com

The webmaster has located dozens of clips of musicals, many from Tony Award broadcasts, but also from older television shows. For example, there’s a 7 minute clip from the Ed Sullivan Show of the entire (!) “Cool” ballet from West Side Story with the original cast. The clip is labelled 1957, but Sullivan says in his introduction that the show is approaching its 2-year anniversary, so the clip is likely from a broadcast in the spring of 1959, shortly before the show closed for nine months.

It’s a black-and-white kinescope, but who cares? It’s Jerome Robbins’ original choreography, and to add to the joy, the clip begins with the scene with Doc at the drugstore which leads into the number. The acting is great, and the dancing is unbelievable.

Enjoy.

oh my gosh doctorjohn!! Thank you so much!

SUE aka 5pants

I discovered that site last week and it is very cool…I could sit and watch and watch.

Oh dear…a new way to spend hours on the computer. Just what I need!

It is amazing, thanks so much! :)

Anothermom-
So TRUE!!! LOL!!!

thank you for starting this thread also. My son is a Junior this year and we have visited some schools but we have a lot of work to do this summer.

A wonderful book for students is (I believe this is the title) “Audition” by Michael Shurtleff (I don’t think that’s the right spelling!). It is an amzing wealth of great audition information.

“So you want to tread the boards” - focus on UK training and work, includes large MT section, foreword by Leslie Bricusse, very favourably reviewed by The Stage (UK’s leading performing arts newspaper since 1890). Available on Amazon, PM me for details.

i can’t find the link to the “big list” of colleges for this forum. i searched the threads and didn’t find it. could anyone point me towards the link?
