I will be taking 4 classes this semester and i already know what books i will be needing for each. I will need a total of 11 books (novels and stories and 1 actual textbook for this semester. Should I buy them all at once now or should i wait till school actually starts and my professors ask for me to bring them to class?

Some of the novels may be available for free online or available from the library.

If the novels are classics or just really old, there’s a decent chance they’ll be available for free in the public domain; http://www.gutenberg.org is one of many great sites to check for them, and it would be easy to get these all downloaded and ready before school starts so you aren’t searching for them later.

For any other novels, email your professors BEFORE school starts to see how early on you’re going to need them and for how long. It might be viable to check them out of the library for just the period of time you’ll need them, but remember that other students might snatch up all the copies before you get to them. If you need them right away or for an extended amount of time, it might be best to just buy them now; novels are a lot cheaper than textbooks anyway, and you can write and highlight all over your own copies without any consequences.

As far as the actual textbook goes, rent or buy it before you leave for school. Libraries and bookstores at the college are going to have limited supplies (not to mention expensive) and it’ll be first come first serve, so your classmates might get all the copies before you do.

Some books end up being optional, so unless you have excess money, wait

Although the novels might be free, if they are using Edition ABC of a classic, then when they talk about page numbers then you will not have the same ones. So you might look at the online syllabus to see which books are first and have those, and then see if it is important for you to have the exact same edition.
