Books to get you in a Halloween mood

There are so many discussions about books on this board, which is great! I also remember a Halloween movie discussion. How about a Halloween book discussion?

So, is anyone reading anything scary, creepy, mysterious, or other-worldly ;)?

Here’s a list of my Halloween books for this year:

The Turn of the Screw by Henry James

Agatha Christie’s Hallowe’en Party

Gods of The Nowhere: A Novel of Halloween by James Tipper - this novel just came out this August, but it’s getting a lot of really positive reviews on Goodreads, and it strikes me as a perfect Halloween book.

And maybe The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, if I have time that is.

“Full Dark, No Stars”. Short stories by Stephen King.

I watched the pilot for Sleepy Hollow, does that count?
Nightmares & Dreamscapes by King is good.
Best short story fantasy book.

Halloween always puts me in the mood for Neil Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book,” even though it’s a YA book. The last chapter gets me every time…

Me too. ;)

My library book club is reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson was seriously considered - maybe next year.

Pet Cemetery by Stephen King

Maybe I will read Rosemarys Baby.
But I will have nightmares about Ruth Gordon.

Some of the best opening lines of a novel - ever.

What book is that from, Scout,59?

“Pet Semetery” (I read it before I had children, and it was awful. I don’t think I could have read it during the toddler/preschooler years.)

“Salem’s Lot” (vampires) by Stephen King.

I’m not Scout59 but I can answer the question. (And I agree with Scout59: the first lines are good. :))

Post #8 - First lines of The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson

So many good Halloween books, so little time ;)

I love the opening lines of The Haunting Hill House - must fit it in on my list!

Christopher Priest’s THE PRESTIGE creeped me out. Very different from the movie(which I liked as well) and a great read.

Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon

Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty.

So is all of The Haunting of Hill House as good as the opening paragraph?

Another one: Ghost Story by Stephen King and Peter Straub (okay, I’m a big Stephen King fan, so sue me. )

One of my favorite scary movies is Ghost Story, which I was reminded of because Ive been watching Deadwoods second season with Alice Krige, who is in the film as well as Fred Astaire, John Houseman, Douglas Fairbanks jr & Melvyn Douglas. ( from the Straub novel)
Ive never read the book though.

“The carnival rolls in sometime after midnight, ushering in Halloween a week early.”
Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury.

I was just going to suggest Ray Bradbury.
Along with Stephen Kings collection of of short stories Nightmares & Dreamscapes, Bradburys The October Country is another collection of stories with a dark twist.

Oooh. I can’t wait to go to the bookstore.
