Borderline Student

After getting a disturbing e-mail from TCNJ saying that my application will go through a “second” more thorough review, i called admissions to figure out what the deal was. Apparently, they will review my application because i am a borderline student. This is just dandy, but i really want to go to this school and honestly other than my horrendous SAT scores i think i had/have a good shot. Now i have to write a statement(essay) why i want to go to TCNJ, granted this is my first choice. I am so nervous this could make or break me… Here are my stats, are there any other flaws???

GPA: 4.23
SAT: 1090(600 VERBAL 490 MATH gross i know)

ECs:
French Honor Society
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
SCIENCE LEAGUE
TOYS FOR TOTS
H.O.PE(ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB)
C.A.R.E
FRENCH CLUB

COMMUNITY:
SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER
VOLUNTEER AT LIBRARY
WRITE IN COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER
HELP OUT IN ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL FOOD DAY
TUTOR: NEIGHBORHOOD KIDS
STUDENT AMBASSADOR FOR THE ASIAN ASSOCIATION

IF SOMEONE COULD PLEASE CRITIQUE MY ESSAY I’D BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO PM THEM THE ESSAY, SO THEY COULD TAKE A LOOK AT IT. I WANT TO SEND IT OUT BY MONDAY, SO THAT THEY LOOK AT IT AS EARLY AS THEY CAN.

PLEASE RESPOND TO MY STATS AND MY ESSAY QUESTION I COULD REALLY USE THE HELP

I won’t be around this afternoon, but you can PM me and I’ll look at it heinously late tonight or tomorrow morning.

I think you had a post up previously that a number of people responded to. Many kids are borderline students for a variety of reasons. There isn’t much you can do now about changing your past now at the 11th hour. I hoped reading this that the admisssion department gave you a tip. I think they are trying to figure out if you are coming, that is why they are asking you for the statement. Whatever you can do to convince them in this statement to add more support that you are coming even perhaps if it means you would take a summer admission would be helpful and I think improve your chances.

Thanks! To Both Of You…

I think that calling them about it, even though you may not know it, would be really helpful. They would see that you are interested in the school enough to inquire about the letter.

I’ll read your essay if you want.

when i called them they said that the reason i got the letter was probably because i was a borderline student. and thanks i’ll pm it to you right away

Possibly since you applied late they thought you were just using them as a safety. The kids who really wanted to go there would have submitted the apps asap. So now they have a few spots left and want to know what your intentions are.
This essay could be a good way to convince them that it is your first choice.
Just my opinion…

i never really thought of it that way. That gives me hope. thanks. By the way karen611990 and kisstherain135 you can send me your comments at gask6■■■■■■.com

that SAT score is absolutely horrible.

don’t be an arse student1, this isn’t a place to attack. Be helpful, not hateful.

There’s a whole thread on the “second review” on the TCNJ forum. Your GPA is great, but your SAT score is pretty low. TCNJ’s average SAT score is a 1260. I would suggest emailing them and telling them that it’s your first choice.

i don’t see the thread on the tcnj forum

sorry about that. but if your SAT went up even 150 points, you’ll be completely set.

obviously if my scores were better i wouldn’t be in this type of position and asking for advice.

On the TCNJ forum, there is a thread entitled “Second Review.” Check that out as well as “Acceptances/Rejections.”

It’s too bad you don’t have more time. If you could take the ACT I’m sure you could get a better score. Good luck on your admissions.

Yes, the SAT score is likely out of their averages.

Well, they accept 44 percent, so I can see why you’re borderline. Borderline actually doesn’t mean that you’re on the very end of the competitive/not competitive threshold. Instead many schools have large groups of ‘borderline’ students. Students that aren’t clear admits and students that aren’t clear rejects. It is your group that is hardest to admit.

You are a borderline student because of your SAT scors and your lack of outstanding ECs (awards, etc.). So right now, your admission will depend on the composition of the applicant pool at TCNJ.
