Bored Rising Junior at a prep school, ASK ME QUESTIONS!!!!

I’m going to be a junior this year and all my friends are starting public school so I’m home alone bored. I know I had so many questions my Freshmen year before school started so ask me any questions you might have. Also, I don’t want to give too many specifics about which school I go to, but on the recently posted acceptance rates we were below 30%.

Also a little bit about me, I’m a guy, top 10% of my class, president of a few clubs this year, and a long distance runner.

So seriously, ask me questions about anything, academics, sports, social life…

Hm… Hard to ask because we can’t specify what school you go to, but how’s the social life? Easy to adjust and fine a good group of friends?

first off I just want to say that a lot of the schools will have very similar social lives, some of the main differences being school size and whether it is co-ed or not. In regards to social life, it depends on your personality. I do have to say that from what I have found it is very cliquey, which can be good and bad. You’ll have your group of friends, but they will be the people you hang out with all the time. I know a few people who try to be part of a couple groups, and that ultimately lead to them not really having many close friends. In terms of easiness to adjust, for me it was very similar to middle school, except kids (before you know them well) are very polite with you, and most of the time start conversations with you. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, TRY TO MAKE FRIENDS EARLY ON WHILE EVERYONE IS STILL POLITE AND TRYING TO MAKE FRIENDS, IT IS MUCH HARDER ONCE EVERYONE HAS FRIENDS.

Is it a school mentioned often here on CC?

Yes, not the most common because it’s smaller, but it is mentioned from time to time.

East coast? Hm… NE state? I know you don’t want to give it away…

Let me throw out a few general questions…what is your favorite & least favorite part of boarding school? Are you glad you went? Was it what you expected, and what surprises were there? Do a lot of people get homesick, or are they mostly glad for the relative freedom? How’s dorm life, if you board? How’s the relationship between boarders & non-boarders? Is it a pretty accepting place, or are there some that clearly don’t seem to fit in? How’s the stress level at exam time? Do kids tend to date those at the same school? Are things easier for you now that you’ve adjusted & know the school, or is the same routine starting to get boring? How’s the school’s relationship with the townies? Thanks!

what is your favorite & least favorite part of boarding school?
Favorite part is the great resources and facilities we have such as the teachers who are available 24/7, the great buildings and all the technology they have, and all of our nice sports facilities. My least favorite part would be either Saturday school, the amount of work we have, or the fact that I feel as if we are too supervised that we can’t do anything.
Are you glad you went?
I’m going to be honest for this one, I’m glad I came from an academic stand point, I’m doing really well and it’s going to pay off when I start the college process, but I think my social life is less than it would have been otherwise just because I am so busy with home work and sports, and then we can’t have parties or anything.
Was it what you expected, and what surprises were there?
Honestly, it was completely different from what I expected in most ways, so different that I really can’t explain it all. The biggest surprises were how differently classes were taught, and how different a lot of the kids were, some in a good way, some in a bad way.
Do a lot of people get homesick, or are they mostly glad for the relative freedom?
There is probably some homesick, but a lot of it is short lived and goes away relatively soon, like after the first night or two. As for "Relative freedom, that’s not exactly what I would call it.
How’s dorm life, if you board?
I do not board, but from what I’ve seen they have fun. There is a big drug scene for boarding boys.
How’s the relationship between boarders & non-boarders?
It’s fine, they don’t hate day students or anything, there are day student jokes but nothing too bad, there definitely is a difference though, boarding student come to become closer friends just because they spend so much more time together.
Is it a pretty accepting place, or are there some that clearly don’t seem to fit in?
Most kids are accepted, there are a few groups that don’t exactly fit in, like at my school the drama group. Also there are a few kids, like robotic kids from china who work 24/7, but that is not the case for most kids. There is always the occasional kid who everyone thinks it really weird.
How’s the stress level at exam time?
It’s usually high, but that’s expected.
Do kids tend to date those at the same school?
Senior do, for everyone else, not really.
Are things easier for you now that you’ve adjusted & know the school, or is the same routine starting to get boring?
A lot easier, my grades were so much better sophomore year, and I didn’t spend as much time working.
How’s the school’s relationship with the townies?
Basically avoidance, they actually almost never talk except when kids walk into town.
