Here’s my post from a few days ago in a different thread:

Go on youtube, search for “noise cancelling shootout” and watch the video by a user named “thebittertrewth”. It’s very interesting.

I got my S a pair of Sennheiser PXC-350’s a while ago, they were around $170 IIRC, don’t remember where on the interwebs I got them. Bose makes a good one also, but it is twice the price. The rest in that test didn’t seem to work that well.

I bought two Sennheiser noise canceling headphones for me and my wife. The work well and sound great. Plus they cost about 80% less than the Bose.

I do have Bose stereo speakers(the original Acoustimass system) which, contrary to Iron Maiden’s post, sound fantastic.

I’m not an expert, but have heard that Bose have improved their noise cancellation significantly, but are not at all great for quality of sound. If the noise cancellation is the most important feature to you, then you’ll probably be fine with the Bose. If you are looking for sound quality, other brands, including Sennheiser, are better.

We gave son Bose headphones for his HS graduation. He loves them. He is graduating college this May and he is still using the same pair. This is my kid who loses everything. He has the over the ear. That is what he asked for.
H has a pair of panasonic noise cancelling headphones I bought them at Costco. They are okay but for as often as he uses them they are fine. He only uses them for flying. They were much less expensive.

Wow…thank you for all the great advice and comments. The noise canceling is important being he’s in a noisy dorm setting, but some of the suggestions are worth looking into…especially if we can save a chunk of money.

For in-ear noise cancelling headphones, I’d strongly recommend Klipsch over Bose. I have the Klipsch in-ears and have tried Bose before, and the Klipsch are leaps and bounds better.

Quick question on noise canceling headphones - when you turn on the noise cancellation switch, are you supposed to - or do you typically hear - hear static? We just got some Senheisers that produce a bit of static noise. Thanks!
