Bose noise canceling headphones?

Are they worth the $$$$?

I just purchased these headphones for college son for Christmas, and must admit, never really shopped around or tested any other brands. We have Bose speakers at home and really trust the name. So are they worth it or can anyone recommend a less expensive brand over these…but only if the quality compares.

Just bought Beats by Dr. Dre Solo HD headphones for my kids since they are the hot item this season. The salesmen couldn’t say enough about them as far as quality for the price over other brands.
DH travels a lot for business and loves his Bose headphones. Bose also had great customer support and replaced a broken adapter at no charge when it broke (his fault). He is pretty cheap and this is an item he splurged on. He doesn’t regret it.

S got Dr. Dre’s for hs graduation. Loves them…
Uses them for cross country flights to college…first thing he packs.
And they are much more “sweet” than Dad’s Bose…
(I think that means they are way cooler than Dad’s…)

S bought a pair of noise-cancelling headphones at Best Buy. Spent under $40. I would not spring for Bose. Glad I didn’t because he lost them–probably left them on a plane.

DH bought Bose for plane travel. He hates them…too bulky. Waste of money.

With Bose you are paying for 90% marketing, 10% materials. You can get way more accurate sound for less money.

“No highs, no lows - must be Bose”

I just got these & they sound really good.

We didn’t compare Bose vs XXX…I bought a pair for D1 when she went away to college. She went to sleep with them almost every night while she lived in a dorm. She swears by it. I have also used them quite a bit on some flights that offer them in the business/first class.

I have a pair of earbud noise cancellation headphones by Panasonic. They are around $100, sound great, but do not cancel noise as well, but since I am not that sensitive to noise, they are sufficient.

I don’t own the Bose noise canceling headphones. But when I was in Europe with our girl scout troop several years ago we spent a couple of weekend nights in a lovely town (Cochem) which is very popular with Germans. And they like to party well into the wee hours of the morning. I shared a room with the GS leader at this particular hotel and she had a pair of Bose noise canceling headphones. I am a very crabby individual when my sleep is disturbed and she was not bothered by the 4 a.m. street noise the way I was so lent the headphones to me. When I first put them on I did not get how they worked as I could still hear the outside noise. But as I relaxed my brain focused on the soothing white noise and blocked out the outside noise. I was able to sleep, hallelujah, though I could not curl up on my side as I usually do (they are huge). I was amazed.

So for noise canceling I think they are great (my son will be doing shift work and sleeping during the day sometimes so I am going to suggest them to his if he has difficulty sleeping). No idea as far as listening to music.

My daughter loves hers and uses them all the time. She uses them when she is working at her computer to keep her from being distracted by other people.

I love mine. I don’t use them on short flights but anything over 2 hrs, I bring 'em along. For some reason, I can’t read on a plane – something about the droning disturbs my train of thought – but with these on, I can. 17 hrs to Beijing would not have been possible without them.

If you are looking for great sound quality, these are okay plugged into an IPod. If you are looking to X out the engine noise, Bose all the way!

That being said, Frontgate.com is running a special where if you buy their noise-canceling headphones for $349, they will throw in an 8GB IPod Touch. Might be worthwhile if you are looking.

We bought another brand for our daughter based on reviews on Amazon, but ended up returning them and getting Bose after all… she loves them.

DH loves Bose - he thinks they are very comfortable, cancel the plane noise really well… As far as the sound quality, an airplane is not exactly a replica of the Benaroya Hall. :)

H bought me the Bose noise cancelling earphones so I could watch movies on a portable DVD player. They’re effective, but really heavy. After a 2 hour movie, my ears hurt and head hurts. I would try them on and imagine wearing them for a few hours.

My dad bought Bose on the ear for the whole family a few years back and I used mine maybe once. Too bulky. This year he gave me the in the ear version and I like them a lot. Great for flights and road trips.

I like them, and find them to be quite comfortable. I suspect that whether you are happy with the sound quality may vary depending on how old you are. They sound good to me–but maybe I can’t hear all those “highs” that well anyway. They are particularly good, as others have noted, for cancelling out airplane noise, which I can’t stand.

H has Bose that sit on the ear. he loves them. The noise cancelling is great! The sound quality is awesome and the additional music you can hear through them is amazing. I have never heard my music as well as when i am listening through these headphones.

I am eager to try their earbuds but not eager to pay the price.

My parents got me a pair of Bose headphones as a graduation gift since I was going to grad school across the country and would need them on the long plane rides to/from home. I’d have probably gone for a cheaper pair since I know Bose have a pretty significant markup, but I have to say I really do enjoy them.

The one thing you should find out is if they want on-ear, around ear, or earbud headphones. After owning the on-ear style for a while now, I wish I had gotten the around ear since the pair I own tend to slip off when I look down. So if I’m trying to nap in my seat on the plan and my head slumps forward a bit, they’ll eventually fall off my head.

The noise canceling is fantastic. I like to wear headphones when I work in the lab, but I have to use a pair of cheapies since my Bose can cancel out all the sound of the machine I’m working on, I can’t tell if it’s malfunctioning by sound with them on!

Thank you, emeraldkity4. S2 asked for sound-isolating ear buds for Christmas and I’ve been researching. The ones you recommended above have many good reviews on Amazon and I can’t believe how inexpensive they are. Probably gonna buy both kids a pair.
