So I ate dinner out with my coworkers and my boss and at the end she gave me $20 for the taxi (I take the subway home but from my station I have to take a bus, which didn’t operate by the time I got to my home station). I only spent $7 and so I have $13 left. Are you supposed to give that money back to her, or did she give the money to me expecting that I was going to use most of it for the taxi?

You don’t have to return it. It is “expected” to be used entirely.

Meanwhile…

That money was intended to be used at your discretion. If you chose to walk home and pocket it all, that is your prerogative.

It would be more appropriate to return the full $20 to her, and only keep it if she declines it.
