I believe everyone in CSOM gets a business major and then picks one or two concentrations. Finance and Business Analytics are both “concentrations” in CSOM. Here is a link to the concentrations page: Concentrations - Carroll School of Management - Boston College
You can pick up to two concentrations in CSOM. If you want to “double major” the second major (or minor) would be in a school outside of CSOM. For example, you can be a business major in CSOM with concentrations in Finance and Business Analytics and also have a major (or minor) in History in MCAS. Best to decide what you are interested in and map it out with your advisor at BC. Having AP credits helps.
My son applied ED1 to BC and was deferred. He is still hoping to attend and wrote a LOCI after the deferral. His first semester grades came out last week and he earned all A+s with three AP classes and two honors. Two questions: 1. What is the process to move from Deferred to Waitlist to Acceptance? and 2. Should he write a second letter highlight the semester’s accomplishments? Thank you.
That is an excellent set of results! I would definitely send an update to his AO to express your sincere interest and achievements. Would his teacher/GC write in about his focus and positive trajectory? It can’t hurt. BC likes community service - any EC’s you can update as well. Which school/subject is he applying for? I would go full court press- politely, of course since your son is still in the running and sometimes these decisions teeter on a razor’s edge. Sending positive vibes.
I don’t think it’s necessarily deferred to waitlist to accepted. He could be admitted during the RD process rather than waitlisted.
My daughter applied ED2 to BC. She was deferred. She was then waitlisted. Ultimately she did not get in. I don’t think this is always the case. I believe some students can get deferred and accepted. Others deferred and rejected. Others waitlisted and rejected or admitted.
I would personally send two LOCIs. The first early on to share your continued interest that BC is THE school of choice and a brief update on anything of value that changes your application. Maybe a higher test score? An Eagle Scout award? New job or project? Then maybe a few weeks to a month before RD come out, I suggest an LOCI2 IF there’s anything new. Maybe some national or international award or honor. Maybe some MVP or new job. Don’t wait too long or it may not make the file. Don’t make it too long or the AO may not appreciate it and just not read it. Just don’t waste the AO time with an LOCI 2 that provides little change.
One question is did your son go test Optional? I hear BC does like tests being submitted. My daughter was TO and I wonder if that was a reason?
I’m not sure for certain if BC prefers tests being submitted but one of the AOs kind of alluded to it at the campus tour when I went there. The percentage of admitted students that submitted scores is higher than the percentage of applicants that submitted scores, but I’m really not sure. BC admits the most highly qualified, diverse first-year class in school history.
There is a paragraph on their website that addresses that they like to see top 10% class rank and so similarly a test score of over 1350 would be a top 10 percentile test score. We have not seen that explicit a “nudge” on other websites.
No matter, DC submitted a 1450 and was rejected. You just don’t know what they are looking for.
That’s true but not only do many schools (including mine) not have class rank, but there are also many other components. A 1450 to BC won’t guarantee admission but it certainly helps.
My opinion is not to send another letter in now. You already sent one after ED1 deferral. I would wait until the RD decision as they will see the scores and consider as part of it. Hopefully he gets in RD, if a waitlist then you send another letter in.
Ageee. DD’s school does not rank, and she was admitted ED1 with a 1450. She had a full, well-rounded resume and lots of rigor in her classes.
When you say move from deferred to waitlist to accept, does BC tend to waitlist a lot of deferred applicants?
I’m also wondering if anyone knows if the deferral rate varies much by school—in other words, do more nursing and Lynch school applicants get deferred due to fewer spots in each class?
I was accepted to Boston College as a Fall of 2025 freshmen transfer student from Georgetown. Got my decision letter on Feb. 25th. What an honor it is to be part of such a wonderful and spirited community, I’m beyond excited to be a Boston College Eagle. For Boston! Go BC!
