I would like to send a care package for finals week to someone at Boston College and would like to include a gift certificate to a restaurant for him to grab a quick bite. Does anyone know what restaurants are next to campus that take gift certificates purchased out of state?
I was surprised to hear that some chains on campuses do not accept gift certificates unless it was purchased at that particular location.
I looked at the BC page on the Niche website and there is a whole section on off campus dining options. El Pelon seems to be a favorite, plus there is apparently a Chipotle and Flatbreads. I am sure Chipotle would accept gift cards purchased elsewhere, and the others are worth a call. You may be able to set up an account with a delivery service such as Foodler.
Thanks for the suggestions. As I understand it, the kid does not have a meal plan and is trying to save as much as possible. A few treats and a gift certificate to Chipotle thrown in along with a little cash might take some pressure off.
My niece can’t use gift certificates at her on-campus Starbucks which I was surprised to discover. Calling sounds like a good idea! What a dope I am for not thinking of that.
Other than White Mountain Creamery and El Pelon, you have to walk to Cleveland Circle for anything. I doubt Mary Ann’s has gift certificates. (The essential BC dive bar.) People have mentioned the basics like Chipotle. (And there’s a Starbucks, which is a very easy choice.) There’s also Sa Pa, which is modern Vietnamese and Eagles Deli, which as the name indicates is BC oriented and which is famous for its “challenge burgers”. I think the current one is 6lbs of burger patties, 24 slices of bacon, 24 slices of american cheese, 5lbs of fries and 1 deli pickle. It may also include a drink.
There are many more choices if your person has a T pass and wants to get away from campus even a bit.
Okay, got a good suggestion! Roggies in Brighton, on Chestnut Hill Ave. They also have gift cards. And they take the BC card (don’t remember what it was called).
Gotta disagree with the words “good suggestion” about Roggies. BC spot, yes. BC kind of greasy spot, yes. Appropriate for a college kid, sure. Actually a good suggestion … my stomach says un-uh. :))
Our son (at Emerson) just asked us to put more money on his campus card which he can use in a bunch of places. He has Money in his debt card account too so he can just eat wherever he wants. I went into town last week to take him to dinner and it was great to see him and hear about his final project. We are lucky to be within less than 1hr driving distance from work and home.
Mention of those dining cards brings back a memory: My D almost never spent all that was on her card by the end of the school year. The boys, on the other hand, almost never had any money left on theirs! My D bought meals for a fair number of boys each year…
When we picked up a kid at end of one year, we went to the store and stuffed as much as we could fit into the car just to eat up the remaining dollars.
^^ Lergnom - D did the same one year when she stayed in Boston for the summer.
We always enjoyed Cityside in Cleveland Circle. Good burgers, sandwiches, and salads. I thought I read that Roggie’s closed after the owner was arrested.
There is a yelp list: Boston College Students’ Guide to Eating: Best to Worst List.
