Boston College [$100k, off waitlist] vs. Case Western Reserve [$50k] Premed

Hi all,

I was accepted to Case Western Reserve University a while ago, and just now I was accepted to Boston College off the waitlist! I have until May 3 to decide if I want to enroll. I plan on going premed. Could anyone enlighten me on which college would be better in regards to getting a high GPA, collaboration, research opportunities, shadowing etc.? Also on the culture of the school in general. Thank you so much for answering! Am so happi

Congrats. Both are great for premed. BC is a Jesuit school, has a core curriculum, and D1 sports. Boston is a great place to attend college. CW has the Cleveland Clinic down the street.

COA of each? Is cost a consideration?

Since most Frosh premeds never make it to the MCAT, pick the college where you think you will best thrive.

These are both fine colleges. You can take the required courses for medical school applicants at either one.
Choose the college where you can see yourself being happy for four years. Happy students do better than unhappy ones, and you will need to be at the top of your game regardless of which of these you choose.

I would consider price, fit, and where you see yourself for four years or possibly more. I have never been to CWR but have been to Cleveland. It’s a nice city, but I prefer Boston. I have visited BC a couple of times, nice campus and great location, not in the city, but suburbs. Half hour from Boston downtown. I personally would go to BC.

BC definitely has a suburban feel, but technically, about a third of the main campus is inside the Boston City limits.

I guess so! It’s close enough to the city as I would want. BU was just too much in the city.

Do you like football and hockey? Does a culture of community involvement appeal to you? Does exploring an historical city with lots of college students in the area sound fun? Planning to join clubs? Enjoy singing or music or dance?
BC is a great spot – checks a lot of boxes for the true college experience.
My sophomore son has loved his experience so far.

Case is more research-focused-lots of access to medical research&hospitals for experience. Quirkier vibe. Lots of things to do right off campus.
BC is more boisterous/extraverted. Big spectator sports. Jesuit core curriculum.

You didn’t say if you enrolled in Case, but if you want to attend there you will need to enroll/deposit by end of today, May 1. If you ultimately choose BC by May 3, you can do so but will likely lose your Case deposit.

I agree with myos1634’s take on the key differences between the schools. If the cost is similar between the two and/or not an issue, I would choose the one where you feel you will thrive best. Have you visited both? Are you interested in the same major(s) at each school?

I agree this is a really good executive summary of the differences, and that assuming both are comfortably affordable, you should pick the one at which you think you are most likely to thrive. For premed or really just in general.

I will just add that I think Cleveland is a fun city and Case has a really nice location. Boston of course is maybe the most desired college market in the world, but I do think sometimes people overlook the easy fun times they can have in other cities as well.

I prefer CWRU for pre-med advising. Just me. Take a look and see what you think.

CWRU is the school for premed—at least that’s what everyone keeps telling my daughter who is looking at it for premed. She is a very social dancer and has also been told that it’s big enough for her to find her people there….. This is what we’ve been told…..for what it’s worth!

I see that you got $30000 merit so CWRU it’s a best choice premed.

In addition to having Cleveland Clinic down the road, CWRU also has University Hospitals main campus…right on the CWRU campus. I mean…it’s right there.

What did you choose?

$35k

Still have tomorrow to decide. BC will be $100k/year while CWRU is $50k/year.

Go CWRU and be proud!

I would not pay twice as much for BC. Save the money.

Other than that obvious cost advantage for Case, these are both fine schools for which fit should be considered.

I’d choose Case in a heartbeat.
