Boston College vs University of Toronto

Hi, I will take an exchange year at either of them from UK, and tuition will be fully paid by uni. So I don’t have to think about tuition.

And I can’t decide which one I should go ?

Please give me some advice !!

What type of experience do you want? Boston College is Jesuit, Catholic, suburban and medium sized. UToronto is public, urban and enormous.

I’m intimately familiar with both institutions.

How old will you be when you do this? You must be at least 21 to drink alcohol legally in Massachusetts; in Ontario it’s age 19. At both you could drink at private parties before those ages, but to go in bars (which is where a significant part of the social life in each city takes place), you would need identification showing you are of age.

What subjects are you going to study?

Do you like to watch sports? BC has the full array of top-notch university-level sports, and thousands of people attend its football, basketball, & ice hockey games. While UofT has teams in these sports, they are not popular spectator events.

At Toronto, students tend to be quieter in classes than at BC. If you want lively in-class debates, BC would be preferable.

Toronto’s campus is completely flat; BC’s campus is hilly.

Walk off campus in any direction at UofT and there are bars, restaurants, and shops right across the street. There arent many businesses adjacent to BC. Both have excellent trolley/subway transportation available.

Within a few hours of Boston there are a lot of things to see & do. There isn’t a lot to do within a few hours of Toronto, except see Niagara Falls.

Toronto is a bigger city, with fascinating ethnic neighborhoods, especially Italian, Greek, Portuguese, & Chinese. There is a huge Chinese presence in the city & at the university. Boston has some ethnic enclaves too, especially Italian, Irish, & Chinese.

Half of BC’s campus is within Boston city limits so it is a cross of mostly suburban setting on the doorsteps of Boston with great public access to the all sections of the city.

The school does not shove its theology down your throat. It is culturally Catholic for sure but your experience can be completely agnostic if you choose.

Fun choices you have.

OP: What is your major area of study ?

Both are great universities in great cities.

Thank you for your advice ! I study Business and Management therefore it is automatically in Carroll or Rotman ! And I do like sports but since I am ethnically East Asian so I was concerning if BC will be ok for me.

I’d love to play baseball !

No wrong choice. Two great options. May come down to whether you prefer case studies involving Canadian dollars or US dollars.

P.S. After further thought, University of Toronto-Rotman may be the wiser choice as it is much easier to get a work visa & permanent residence status in Canada if you prefer to stay.

BC has had a steady 10% Asian American population for years.

I don’t know the Asian experience at BC, but the Boston area is heavily Asian influenced, with Harvard
Square and Central Square Cambridge having some really amazing and authentic soup dumplings, and many Asian MIT and Harvard students. Ditto on NEU and BU, have more and more Asian students. Asian Indian, Chinese American dominate Boston, over other Asian ethnic groups.

The percentage of East Asian students at U of T is much higher than at BC. It’s probably close to 40-50% East Asian at U of T. There are plenty of ethnic restaurants, including Japanese, Chinese and Korean within walking distance to campus. Toronto is a much bigger city than Boston, with a lot more to do. U of T is in the heart of the city.
