Boston neighborhoods near Northeastern

I bookmarked a very complete post about neighborhoods in DC. I’m looking for the same for a grad student at Northeastern. Money, of course, is an issue but not interested in unsafe or unsavory either. Any ideas specific and general would be great. Thanks!

Do you care how close or far? Do you mind needing to take the train? I think Fenway and the South End are great, because they’re good neighborhoods and they’re both just about a fifteen minute walk, but you’ll pay more for rent. I got really lucky living in Fenway for a year with a really good deal, and I loved that I could walk to class and walk to my co-op and to most places that I needed (hated the screaming mobs of Red Sox fans though), but the price was kind of an anomaly.

Mission Hill is also right by campus, and a lot of students live there. It’s a bit cheaper, and has a bit worse of a reputation, but I don’t think it’s really actually dangerous. I know a lot of people who have lived there and liked it. Jamaica Plain is a great and relatively cheap neighborhood, but not very walkable (right non the same train and bus line as NU though).

If you have a car, you can look into Allston and Brighton, but I wouldn’t want to commute on public transportation from there. I lived in Somerville for my last two years, where I moved for price and space, but it’s certainly not a neighborhood right by campus. If you like Cambridge, though, Harvard and Central squares are pretty convenient because there’s a bus that goes really close to campus. I guess it also depends on what you’re looking for in a neighborhood, how much you can pay, and how far you’re willing to commute.

Thanks! A commute on the T is certainly not out of the question and a fine trade off for lower rent in a fun and safe neighborhood.

DS lived in apartments as an NEU undergrad. Best one was in Jamaica Plain (JP). He was able to find a studio at just under a thousand a month. With roommates things are a bit cheaper. The commute was very manageable. After graduation he lived for a short time in Somerville. Much bigger place for your money there but it is a longer commute and he found it a pain. I would recommend JP then Mission Hill as a second option…
