Boston restaurants

Son is in Boston now and searching restaurants, more specifically German restaurants. Any suggestions from those of you with local knowledge? Needs to be within walking distance or public transport from downtown (and a safe neighborhood says the overprotective dad).

He should check out Boston.com. There is also a Zagat for Boston/Cambridge.

I’ve never heard of a good German restaurant in Boston (except maybe the Wursthaus, which has gone out of business).

He might want to try Jacob Wirth (www.jacobwirth.com), which is near the Wang Center / Chinatown.

Go to chowhound.com for extensive reviews by real foodies. (Like CC for food).

jacob wirth’s is great as are any of the pubs by government center

My daughter in Boston has heard several people say good things about Jacob Wirth.

No clue about German restaurants. Whenever I am in town, DS opts for Flemings, a very high end steak/seafood place.

Son found and dined at Jacob Wirth’s his first free day, gave it a thumbs up.

Still taking suggestions for a German restaurant if anyone else knows of one.

I just did a web search and one site claimed what I also suspected – Jacob Wirth’s is the only German restaurant actually in Boston.

I guess there just isn’t a big ethnic German community here.

Here’s one in Methuen, although he’d probably need a car to get there:

[German spot in Methuen worth the hunt - The Boston Globe](http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2006/01/22/german_spot_in_methuen_worth_the_hunt/?page=2)

Some others in the state are [The Vienna](http://www.thevienna.com/) in Southbridge, [The Hofbrauhaus](http://www.hofbrauhaus.org/)) in West Springfield, and [The Student Prince](http://www.studentprince.com/) in Springfield.

Also check yelp.com. My grad student D. is a prolific contributor when she’s trying to avoid her reading. There are many restaurant reviews.

I remember the Wursthaus…used to be one in my hometown. I am not as big a fan of German restaurants as my husband is , but there is certainly no shortage of good restaurants in Boston

OK - So not much luck with German restaurants (son’s current favorite type) in Boston, how about clam chowder? Where can a California kid get a good bowl of traditional New England style chowder in Boston?

Clam chowder’s way easier to find in Boston than German food. Here are a few of the most popular spots for seafood:

Summer Shack (in Boston and Cambridge)
Legal Seafood (several in Boston; this chowder’s served at presidential inaugerations)
The Union Oyster House (oldest restaurant in Boston),
Turner Fisheries (at Westin Hotel–Copley Place)
Atlantic Fish Co. (Backbay)
Someone will probably suggest the No Name–which I think may have the worst seafood around. IMO it’s a huge tourist trap. I haven’t been there for a number of years, but I don’t think it’s fare has improved.
