anyone knows when they get back to you if you submit a financial aid appeal for reconsideration? I really want to go but our family can’t afford the tuition and fafsa barely gave me money.. ik their review period is 4/23-4/31 or something like that

Did you complete the CSS Profile and submit that to Boston University? They use the financial information on the Profile to determine the awarding of their institutional need based aid. Not the FAFSA (which would be used to determine your eligibility for federally funded aid like the Pell Grant and Federal Work Study).

I think they are mostly kids who took guaranteed transfer.

yea I did both fafsa and css.. idk it said the money I got is from the government I think but the thing is our income is kinda different from 2023 (which is what css asked for) and I couldn’t get enough to attend I really need more money in order to attend:(

The FAFSA gives you loan access - $5500 a year.

The CSS is what they use to determine institutional need.

If it’s unaffordable, you can appeal - but you’re unlikely to win - so you’re better off to determine who on your acceptance list you can afford - or find another school that you can afford.

I promise you - there is not just one school where you could be happy.

Good luck.

There are specialists who help families craft “appeal letters”. We know a family that did so successfully 2 years ago.

Read the link above about financial reconsideration at BU. You don’t need a paid specialist to write a letter.

You need to state clearly, and be able to document any changes in your financial situation that are not reflected on your financial aid forms.

For example, if a parent lost their job, you need to document that, when it happened, and the income lost.

We thought we might have to do this once when our student was enrolled at BU.

For job loss, at the time (2003), they wouldn’t even consider job loss until 6 months had passed since the job loss because the thought was that a new job could be found (and it was).

You can also contact your financial aid person at BU and ask exactly what they need for your situation for a reconsideration.

How much more money do you need? If it’s $2000, you have a better chance than if it’s $20,000.

Does the culture of med students 20+ years ago matter? I am confused. I can’t imagine med students have much overlap with undergrads at BU, even if contemporaneous? The campuses aren’t even that close at all.

Same. 4.08 UW/4.3 W and 1590 SAT. Waitlisted. Wondering if they are trying to avoid offering merit scholarships given uncertainty of future federal funding.

Yes, our family too.

By #s, BU doesn’t offer a lot of merit aid to begin with.

Only 8% (non athletes) got merit aid.

Only 37% got need aid.

Now you say how can that be - they’re need blind - and yet the truth is they’re a rich kid school.

Well if 56% of your enrollees are Early Decision - who do you think applies ED? While of course, some with need do, it’s mostly kids with resources that apply ED - so yes, they are in fact, playing the game where they sound great - but attracting relatively wealthy families - because they’re the ones willing to pay full freight.

I don’t know your rigor, but less than half submit a test and if you believe the CDS, the test score is the 2nd from the bottom of importance (only considered - not Very Important or Important).

So I’d suspect someone who doesn’t get in RD has more to do with that it’s RD vs. ED because they are feasting on ED, and I wouldn’t suspect federal funding has impacted the # of merit scholarships - since few got them to begin with.

Best of luck.

I don’t know if it’s merit they’re trying to limit or their yield they’re trying to protect, but the spreadsheet of cc respondents is pretty clear that students with a 1560+ would’ve done better to go TO. Lots of 1400’s accepted up to 1550. Lots of TO accepted. None with 1560+ accepted (they were either waitlisted or rejected.)

I agree, and that was my point too. Why comment on things that are THAT old… the tone might not have come through.. Though I do think commenting on med students would be even sillier..(and pointed that out). And also agree n=1 isn’t a great representation of the culture either..

Moving on, in general, though, I would be curious what you mean by “euro/club” culture - do you mean more drugs? (I actually googled this term to no avail) I don’t think landsdowne st or BU is particularly high crime in terms of assaults does it?

And I agree, my bias would be to be more scared of my kid at a fraternity party with a high level of default safety and trust…maybe as I went to a very greek school.

(Also, yes I am pretty familiar with the BU area, etc)

Anyway for anyone randomly interested - very detailed Crime Logs are published:

Also, kids I knew who went to BU in the 1990s did a LOT of drugs in HS, so not sure if there is data how different it is. (and yes that is a small N)

is this different than many schools?

I knew tons of kids who blacked out on the regular (not at BU) in the 1990s. and yes, it get less so for almost all of them over 4 years and none (that I know well still) are alcoholics now.

I feel like you are claiming BU is so different, and not seeing it.

My son got GT and we’ll definitely be exploring the options. Did you get the international partner info after accepting the offer or just a few days later after the decision? My son is not completely satisfied with his accepted school options so a study abroad pathway to BU (his top choice) may be preferable. Thx!

We are super excited about it as well! Congrats !
