I am currently a senior in high school and so I am trying to figure out where I want to go. I was accepted to 10 or so schools, but my top picks are Boston University and University of Michigan. I want to major in fine arts (specifically focusing on painting and printmaking) with a minor (or possible dual major) in marketing. University of Michigan would allow me to dual major, but Boston University would not.
Both schools will cost a similar amount so financially, there is not one school that is better than the others. I visited both and I liked the facilities and the areas despite them being vastly different. I would say I thought University of Michigan had better art facilities in terms of space, technology, and materials.
I am torn between the two schools as I am trying to figure out which one will serve me best for my future goals. After undergraduate, I want to get a MFA from a top graduate university and then go into gallery work. Boston University is a feeder school for the graduate school I want to attend. At University of Michigan, most of the students do not attend graduate school, but instead get a job in the arts (they have a very high job placement).
I feel like University of Michigan would allow me to explore the most in terms of art as they are into conceptual work and developing your own style. They also have incredible studio spaces and facilities. On the other side, Boston University is focused more on traditional art, which would help me get into graduate school, but also limit me in terms of developing my own style. I am very conflicted about what school to attend.
If anyone has any insight or personal experience about either or both art programs, please let me know! Thanks!
