Botch State aid

Hello fellow College confidential users,

Alright here is my situation right now. In the summer I was really weighting heavily towards going to the Navy, because the experience seem life changing college was not really a complete option. I had one college in particular that was courting me to go. They told me that I can apply for FAFSA and get state aid. I made decision to go thinking in today economy a bachelor’s degree will be essential. I had the old get a degree it important speech drill into my head over and over. I’m at a expensive private school, where the tuition is now 37,000 a year. The reason why I decided to attend this school is because I new that I was going to get a lot of financial aid, which cover about half the cost. I did receive a lot of financial aid. However, the state aid did not get in because I had a hard time getting the require documents due to a lot of stressful circumstances.

Sorry for that long intro, I do plan on transferring to a more affordable school next semester, but as usual the college is keeping my transcripts till the money comes in. However, the state aid did not come in to cover the rest because I had a hard time getting in the proper documents to the state of New Jersey.

By the time I got it I almost miss the deadline which was November 15, 2013. I fax them the require documents that day.
I should have call them the following Monday, but my phone service was interrupted. I call the state today in order to confirm I fax it, but the employee on the other line say that because of the fact there was no cover letter there was no way they can tell it was my mine. I spoke to them previous and they never told me to send a cover letter. The documents belong to my parents, and I told the employee that I can confirm it by providing them both with the social security. So now I call the governor’s office and spoke to a office consultant and he say he can send a letter to appeal for me.

So the deadline for the bill is coming up, and I have been thinking of just stopping college and go with my first choice the navy, or take out a loan, but I do not want to risk going into debt. Sorry for the long the story, but I just want some advice this website seem to have a lot of it. Thank you in advance.

Finish this semester. Then join the Navy, or get a job, or do whatever you have to do to make the money to pay off your remaining bills so that you can get your transcripts when you need them some day. Don’t drop out right now. You will owe your college/university all that money, and you will have nothing but a transcript full of Ws or Fs to show for it.

Go have a talk with the dean’s office at your college/university and see if someone there can intervene for you with the state financial aid office. Maybe something can still be done.

Thank you so much for the advice. I was not going to drop out now. I will finish the semester. Tomorrow I will talk to the financial aid office. I did filed a appeal through one of the governor’s aid maybe that will help. The one problem I do have will be trying to convince my parents that I want to go the Navy after the semester Again thank you.

Here is my best advice:

Go to your school’s financial aid office and speak with someone who can assist you. A lot of times they can assist with the state aid office. Also the financial aid office may be able to put something on your account saying the money is coming in so your transcripts could be released.
