Bought appliances

Update…I bought a Bosch 300 series dishwasher, and a GE Profile French Door fridge. I sure hope I like them!

^^ I hope they work well for you - for a long time.

Enjoy!!!

:)

Bosche, hmmm…I guess you are not paying for college any more. Enjoy.

Wait, what’s a french door fridge?

Split doors in the top, the freezer on the bottom.
We were looking at them tonight, H likes the kitchenaid.

I like the French door fridges - hopefully I can find one counter depth when I go to replace my built-in and since my current fridge is on 25 years I’m holding my breath. We have a long narrow galley and a regular depth fridge would stick out into the kitchen in a very noticeable ugly way. I think you will love both Thumper even though you posted in the wrong forum.

My new French Door is a counter depth. 30 inches with the handles. I looked at GE Profile, Kenmore Elite, Kitchenaid, and Whirlpool Gold. All make counter depth French Door fridges.

Congrats, thumper! :)

Thumper, will you let us know how you like the bottom freezer? This is what’s stopped me from moving to that- how things stack. (Now have the old side-side style.) If you love yours, I’ll be reassured (!)

Mom3- wow, I guess we’re at 19 years.

kitchenaid was bought by whirlpool. Dont expect they’ll be all too different.

Re: the difference in brands…it’s all about the features and trim. The Kitchenaid was MUCH nicer (in my opinion) than the Whirlpool, but it was only 19 cuft total. The Kenmore Elite was 25 (yes for a counter depth) but the extra space was in the freezer and the cost for that was an additional $600 plus.

Everyone I know loves their bottom freezer. I hope I do too!

thumper, share more about your research. Why did you buy these two in particular?? What else did you consider? Why the French door style? etc. As you know, I’ll be re-doing my 1960s kitchen shortly.

(BTW, I had the GE repairman here the other day for a small problem with the washing machine. He came into the kitchen to set up his computer and on the way in, I warned him I was taking him back in time. He was really surprised at how old the appliances in the kitchen were. Can you imagine – even the GE repairman was impressed by my 1960s appliances!!)

You will enjoy using a VERY quiet dishwasher!

Congrats Thumper, agree with ksm, you will love the quiet dishwasher! We installed a very quiet Electrolux dishwasher in our kitchen that is open to the family room and it is so quiet, I can’t even tell it is on.

The french doors are great. Having had a bottom freezer for many years, I have some advice: keep it organized. It’s great having more fridge space at eye and bend level but the freezer can become a ghetto and you start to dread pulling out the drawer. So keep things in motion. We were only able to solve the problem when we got a freezer for the basement. We try - note “try” - to move things down and up. But since you use the freezer much less often, the trade is worth it.

As for the dishwasher, while it should work for a long time, if it fails you can with some effort find instructions for fixing it on the net. I noted before that I’ve soldered the heater resistor and then, a few years later, replaced the control board. Total cost was maybe $100 for the parts plus an hour or two of searching for instructions and taking the darned thing apart (lots of screws and hidden tabs to push).

When we bought our house, the realtor suggested we get an insurance policy covering repairs for household appliances, plumbing, etc. and it has paid for itself every year (first year was covered by the seller-their idea). The house came with the OP’s new dishwasher and last year the motor went out. We paid only $60 for the call and nothing for the new motor or installation. Best money we’ve spent on the house is that policy.

The dishwasher is so quiet my kids have been known to start the shower not realizing it’s on, and it does agreat job. It’s SO much better than the cheapest of the cheap piece of junk our landlord had installed at the house we rented.

VH, we decided on the French Door model for a funny reason. We got white appliances. Since we were not getting stainless like everyone else, we figured we’d at least get the “trendy model” which is the French Door. It was either that or another side by side.

Re: the research…at the end of the day, I went with what I liked the look of. The fridge we purchased was actually panned by consumer reports. Actually ALL of the counter depth fridges were panned (except the built ins…not getting those!!). It came down to the Kenmore Elite, which I really liked but it’s much more expensive (it was “on sale” for $2800), the GE Profile…either a side by side or French Door (both $2339) or the Kitchenaid which we decided was too small. I just decided I LIKED the layout of the GE best and the overall look. I hope I like it and it works well.

Re: the dishwasher. EVERYONE we know recommended a Bosch. My husband did not want a Bosch. BUT he eventually told me to buy what I wanted. So…when I placed the order, I bought the Bosch I liked. It will be fine…and my husband will get used to it!! It was between the Bosch, Kitchenaid, and the Kenmore Elite. Any of them would have been fine…but that Bosch was so recommended by everyone, I went with that.

There were some things I liked but couldn’t get because they don’t come in white. GE makes a nice Cafe Series (in counter depth) but not in white. Oh well.

Eighteen years ago we bought all seven appliances for this house without reading one review. It was all about the price (except for the fridge). I hope we have the same luck with the new purchases.

Oh…we looked at Sears Appliance (which is where we bought them), the local appliance store (but it was looking a bit shabby), Home Depot (where the sales person was LESS than helpful), and Home Depot (where the salesperson was awesome…but they didn’t really have the customer service I wanted).

They claim these will be delivered on December 18.

Stay tuned!!

I’m researching 36-inch dual-fuel ranges, as well as 24-inch combination microwave/convection ovens. Considering a KitchenAid 36-inch and a Frigidaire or GE or Bosch 24-inch. Anyone know anything?? (This is very specialized, I realize.)

Thank you Thumper you just did all my research for me (I also have white appliances except for my green Viking stove which i will never ever part from and I have no desire for Stainless)!

I do have to admit that copper color would be intriguing but I think I’ll stick with the white so i don’t have to change the cabinets to go with copper.

Ordered two Bosch 300 series dishwashers yesterday. Our old dishwashers were Bosch and lasted 16 yrs. Went with Stainless. Our old dishwashers have a panel that match our cabinets.I liked the model with the handle but couldn’t justify the added cost just for looks. In the past week we have had our built in Microwave die, instant hot water burn out and our gate motor go. Our 16 yr old KitchenAid side by side built in refrigerator has been repaired several times over the last couple of years. Our repairman has advised us to keep fixing it as long as we can. In his opinion the newer stuff just isn’t made to last.
