**Bowdoin Class of 2017 Regular Decision Discussion**

Brunswick is close to the coast so the winters aren’t as bad as inland, but there will be 8 or 10 storms with 10+". The Timby’s will do for most days in between, but there should be a pair of boots (stop at Freeport on the way north and get a pair from the outlets maybe). There will be some subzero days with wind, so a winter coat is a necessity, but layers will do for many days during the winter. A hat that he will actually wear is very important. Warm gloves too (multiple pairs for when they get wet). Warm socks. It won’t snow in a big way till November (but October flurries are typical). Polar fleece.

There’ve been very heavy snowfalls 2/3 winters S has been in Brunswick, with snow on the ground all winter, through March. S seems happy with the insulated Gore-Tex Bean boots he picked out in Freeport. Assume your S will lose hats and gloves, so I suggest not going high-end on those. Layers are good. I suggest warmth (lots of it) without weight. For outerwear, try to get his name in it somewhere so his black Patagonia or NorthFace jacket can be distinguished from all the others after a party.

^^Good point! I envision a dorm room bed covered in identical black LL Bean coats! lol Thanks for the suggestions!

Sorry for the late response. Thank you to those of you with your kind words. My daughter has accepted Stanford’s offer of admission, (her dream school), although we feel bad declining the other schools–especially Columbia, Pomona, and Vassar–who offered almost a full ride as well. However, we are happy for the fact that five people will be offered a place off of each respective school’s waitlist. I am also thrilled that she will be 500 miles from home rather than 3000 :). Good luck to everyone with your college decisions.

Silly question…I asked my son to ask on the FB page but thought someone here might know…How do the laundry facilities work at Bowdoin? Do you use a card of some sort to pay or do you need cash/quarters?

Hi, keepingitlight. Their ID card is called OneCard and you, as a parent, can conveniently add money as needed. I know this because my son texted me a couple of weeks ago letting me know his OneCard was getting low!

So just to follow on, as you may have guessed, you use the OneCard to pay for the laundry ($3.00) for one wash and dry.

^^Thank you so much for the info!

Best thing of all: Laundryview!
You know when to run down and grab a machine this way.

To Helenstreet - First off congratulations to your daughter on Stanford, I wish I had applied. And in regard to my post about Bowdoin being a safety, I feel now I was unfair in my assessment of you and your daughter. Based on your description, neither of you have ANY delusions of her merit; she sounds incredible. Really astounding even, to be that accomplished by age 16 is nothing short of amazing. I’m actually shocked she wasn’t admitted, the only thing I can think of is that perhaps the admissions office was uncomfortable accepting a 16, I think someone mentioned that. Anyways, I’m sorry for being overtly aggressive before, and congratulations once again, I’m always happy to see things work out.

What about bikes? Worth it to haul one up from NYC? Where would you keep one? Any places to store one during holidays and summer breaks?

Thanks so much PolarBear! Great program…$25 well spent!

Do any current Bowdoin students have recommendations for the best kind of laptop/features to bring to Bowdoin in the fall? Any preference on PC versus Mac, etc.?

RockRidger: The majority of students run Mac/OSX as personal machines. The campus is set up for both OSX and Windows. The school also runs Linux computational servers.

IT also loans out machines if you need to swap operating systems, assuming you hate to dual boot. If you need to get a new machine, you can order direct from Dell or Apple and receive discounted pricing as a student, although the best savings is always found by purchasing in-warranty used business laptops from corporate resellers.
