@garvey Yes, the freshman move in and spend their first official night at Bowdoin sleeping in the field house with the people they’re on the trip with. They then wake up in the morning and leave for a couple days, and official orientation begins once they return.
Some trips are more popular. For the more popular ones, such as Aziscohos Valley (the one I went on, and loved!) there are multiple groups so around 50-60 students get to do them.
