Brag about your "lesser known" school!

st olaf is indeed a special place. Lawrence is also a lovely school…with a prestigious music conservatory. the problem for both schools is location and weather.

Location is relative! I assume Friedokra is from the south … so WI & MN seem darned cold. You can always put on an extra sweater or a warmer coat … and skiing/snowboarding can make the cold worthwhile!

Then again, D (a MI girl) is going to school in SC!!

Curry college is a up and coming school that is small and outside of boston and has a top notch started the LD program trend…30 yrs ago…now theres over 100 LD programs at different colleges…programs have even copied the colleges LD Program name Curry colleges program: PAL
Hofstra’s program name: PALS

How about the University of Dallas in Irving, TX? It’s a small (1200 undergrads) Jesuit LAC with a true core/Great Books curriculum. Bright student body (75th M/V SAT percentile is 650/700) and truly outstanding study abroad program.

Our experience with this school has been through its summer study abroad program for high school students. My three daughters have done residential programs in either classics (“Latin in Rome”) or history (“Thomas More in England”) that were superbly run and very well taught. The courses were taught on a very challenging level - no fluff there. If my child wanted a small LAC or a Catholic college experience in the South, I’d strongly encourage him/her to investigate UD. My own kids aren’t Catholic and didn’t feel out of place in the study abroad program, though I don’t know how they’d have felt on campus for 4 years, of course. Certainly if a student wanted a school that featured the Catholic perspective, UD would provide it.

Random brag-worthy facts: UD has its own satellite campus outside of Rome where most of its undergrads will do a semester abroad. The class of 2005 included 9 Fulbright recipients (per the school’s fact sheet). The SAT scores for incoming freshmen are the 3rd highest in TX, after Rice and Trinity. I’m impressed!

Colorado State University. Great education. Great people. Great campus, town and weather. And it’s a good buy. Come here and talk to the students. You’ll see what I mean.

We visited FIT. It wasn’t for son, but we enjoyed the area around Melbourne.

While we are talking FL another school that is worth a visit is Stetson in DeLand. While this has been awhile, I remember vividly how friendly not only the staff at Stetson was, but how friendly the whole town was to us. I was impressed with the facilities as well. Son ultimately didn’t apply here, but it remained at the top of his list for quite awhile because he thought he could be quite happy there.

Please add Tufts to the list! While it may be better known on the east coast, we get a lot of blank stares here in California when we mention this little jewel of a school.

We West Coasters don’t usually think of it but we were impressed with the UNIVERISTY OF IOWA when we visited. Good med school, too.

And in San Francisco don’t forget UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO, an excellent smaller Jesuit school in the middle of the city. Has a law school, too.

This school isn’t exactly unheard of, but it’s wicked underrated because it doesn’t play US New’s ranking game.

I’d say it’s one of the top 10 LAC’s in the country, but I don’t even think it’s in the top 50. It’s really fantastic.

And that’d be Reed College in Portland, OR

caligali i have visited USF personally also i have visited Mills College last summer…it wasnt a tour but we walked around campus…me ad my dad at both schools my dad promised me when we went last summer to SF to visit family while my mom was busy and we had nothing to do we would visit Mills(which is in Oakland) and USF it was good…U of Iowa is a good school

We LOVE the University of Iowa. I just posted a long comment about it on the Penn State thread.

^Ouchhhhh…competition!

You can do whatever you want with the updated list. Maybe a trivial pursuit game. Or better yet, when someone corners you and asks where your child is applying, you can spurt out three or four of the less common names and then measure and observe the facial expressions on the asking party when you completed your response.

BTW: Of the 170 names, only 24 are on the CTCL list.

I think all of these colleges change students’ lives for the better. It is a shame that Loren Pope doesn’t put out an addendum and write an article about all of these great places. Thanks for all your work on this thread.

That list is still VERY incomplete. If you really want a complete look, simply go to the home page on CC and click on alphabetical listing of colleges and there they all pop up.

I would also add Fordham University. Two campuses, gorgeous Rose Hill in the Bronx ( a stunning gothic campus right next to the New York Botanical Gardens). The number 5 ranked college library in the nation with over 2.5 million volumes and over 500 computer work stations. Its faculty is simply amazing…over 70% are Ivy educated. Its a SUPERB feeder school to Ivy grad schools and professional schools. It has DEEP programs. Its core curriculum is not for the faint of heart, but then again, Fordham is an academic school, not a party school. Its alumnae include many CEO’s on WallStreet, Denzel Washington and Vince Lombardi.

The other campus is at Lincoln Center, next to Fordham Law.

Its football team is 125 years old.

I have a hidden gem right in my backyard (well, not literally, but 5 min. away). DeSales University is a relatively young college in Center Valley, PA. It has an excellent theatre program. I go to four of the performance every school year and they are often sold out. It also has a very well regarded physicans assistant program. The campus is large and beautiful.

But friedorka, they don’t all pop up on CC’s alphabetical list. The CC list is very incomplete.

not only is the CC alpha list incomplete, some of the schools that ARE on it that are mentioned in this thread see very little activity (probably exactly because they’re “lesser known”). Kind of a self-fulfilling popularity contest (sort of like high school…)

I am a senior in Illinois Wesleyan and I love every second of it. I was accepted in University of Virginia and UW-Madison, but the choice came down to Truman State and IWU b/c of my parents’ financial situation. I have no regret going to IWU. The small size allows me to get involved more with different organizations: president in a cultural club, Hansen Student Center crew, Resident Assistant, etc. IWU has a great pre-med reputation and it is included in the CTCL list. Ames Library is also amazing.

As the OP I just had to share something I saw on my D’s school’s website today… her school Ohio Northern University has jumped to the No. 2 ranking among Midwest comprehensive colleges in the 2008 U.S. News & World Report annual edition of "America’s Best Colleges. They have been #5 for the past 5 years of so…so that’s a nice jump and exciting to see the recognition as she begins her journey there!!!
