dbwes- My Grandma went to St. Olaf, she was in the choir there.

Ditto to what a few others have replied to this.

My school certainly isnât on CCâs listâŠand can think of many others that arenât, either.

I donât even think the Princeton Review has my school on their database. Even though itâs a state university with a great reputation in Engineering and hopefully Business soon, as well.

We are struggling with a decision related to the above topic. My d, going to be a high school senior, is interested in the PA program & would like to stay within driving distance of home (Ma). She would prefer to get into a 5 or 6 year combined program rather than reapply again for the masters program offered in most universities, but these are offered by several schools that we have never heard of. Some of these include Wagner College, Seton Hall, DeSales university & University of the Sciences in Philly. A few of the schools such as Quinnipiac, Drexel & Duquesne we have heard of, but are not very familiar with. I would love to get input from anyone who has experienced/considered any of the above schools & what their experience has been.
While we would not be looking at Ivy League Schools for her in any case, we would be looking at higher ranked schools than these if she was going for a Bachelorâs degree in any other field. But I can see from this thread (which is great idea), that one can be just as happy in a lessor known school. Any input on the above mentioned schools would be appreciated.

Daughter of a good friend just started the program at Quinnipiac today. Sheâs very excited. Iâll be interested in this too as my niece is interested in this kind of program as well.

In Pennsylvania, we are lucky to have so many well respected colleges. It seems like every county seat has a college just down the street from the courthouse.

A couple of colleges in the commonwealth ought to be cited here: Ursinus, Washington & Jefferson, Juniata, St. Francis, St. Vincent, Lafayette, Lehigh and Muhlenberg. Too often these schools are overshadowed by the better known brand names (you know who they are)

A couple of colleges in the commonwealth ought to be cited here:
Ursinus, ON THE LIST
Washington & Jefferson, ON THE LIST
Juniata,
St. Francis,
St. Vincent,
Lafayette, LESSER KNOWN???
Lehigh LESSER KNOWN ???
Muhlenberg ON THE LIST

Can you tell us something about the others which have not been a topic of anyoneâs discussion?

Elizabethtown ¶ should be added to the list. Doesnât appear on CCâs alphabetical list, even after I emailed moderators twice requesting it to be there after an earlier thread mentioning it. Wonderful school!

I have always thought at St. Vincent has one of the most comprehensive distribution requirements that I have seen over the years. SVC has compiled a faculty of instructors who are interested in teaching; SVC faculty members do not see teaching as they price they have to pay to do research.

St. Francis College has focused a lot of its attention recently on developing some top notch programs in health related professions, such as physical therepy and physiciansâ assistantships. Again, the emphasis at SFU is teaching, not research.

Both institutions are devoted to developing men and women of service and to developing the whole person.

In addition, both campuses are in the Allegheny mountains and are picturesque as any other small college in the US.

Believe it or not, both Lehigh and Lafayette are overshadowed a lot of other colleges in the commonweath of Pennsylvania â Penn State and CMU in engineering, Haverford, Swathmore, Bryn Mawr, and Franklin & Marshall among the traditional liberal arts colleges.

I love this thread! So far Iâve made notes on Milliken, U of Tulsa and U of Dallas (I actually helped acquire UDâs Italy property for them.)

Posters, when mentioning a school, could you provide some specifics re what is so special about it? Khipperâs post # 289 is a good example.

Thanks again for all the contributions - this is one of my favorite threads! :)

P.S. Thanks again, Father of the Boarder, for keeping the list updated.

I go to a school named Harvard College. Has anyone here heard of it? Not many people know of it, but I think itâs a pretty good school.

Other PA colleges that deserve some recognition: Gannon U in Erie (snowbelt) is offering fantastic fin aid to engineering majors as an enrollment incentive. Two of my Sâs friends are freshman at this Catholic school on free tuition/half R&B rides in Mechanical Eng. Both had SATs in the 1200-1300 range.

University of Pittsburgh AT JOHNSTOWN has some very attractive features for those whose scores might not allow them to go to the main campus. The campus looks like a swiss fantasyland - stunning, up in the mountains.

Geneva College in Beaver Falls, about 30 miles from Pittsburgh, has some fantastic football and a very closeknit feel with great fin aid. My neighborâs twin daughters went there together and are now attending PA Col of Medicine. Their aid covered 90% of costs with grants/scholarships. Each girl graduated owing less than $4K. The school is related to the Dutch Reformed Church but there are lots of Catholics on campus, as well as other Christian denominations.

In Columbus, there is a little school called Ohio Dominican college which is a terrific place for B/C+ students. Wonderful theatre program, very nice cafe, and cross registration with the big colleges nearby. For someone looking for a tiny college with some big city opportunities, that might be a good choice. I think they also have a good program for learning disabled students.

Is there any one stat in these schools people want? : e.g. size or M/F ratio?

I guess of the two: size.

Would you be willing to list the #'s of the thread posts for particular schools on this master list, if people private-messaged you with those numbers?

I would like to add Manhattan College in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.
My nephew got a full scholarship there and is enjoying it very much.
Solid engineering department, among others. He loves the easy access
to Manhattan and all it has to offer as well.

I will put in a plug for The College of NJ. Itâs right on the border of NJ and PA. A gem hidden away in Ewing township, which is south of Princeton.

Has a beautiful Southern feel to its campus. Is fully renovated and well resourced. Heavily underscores research in Medical Sciences.
Offers direct 7 year BS/MD program through UMDNJ as well as a 7 year Optometry program.

All kids who get accepted in their BS/MD program get merit scholarship that pays 100% tuition.

A bit of a clarification on Beaver College (my husband used to work there). It is not afflilated with the Dutch Reformed church. It is affiliated with the Presbyterian Reformed Church, which is not mainstream Presbyterian. I donât know a lot about them, except I seem to recall that they donât vote. Students are forbidden to drink and drinking by faculty/staff is greatly frowned on.

Princeton Review came out with this about DDâs college, Willamette, and we couldnât agree more:
âAcademically rigorous, intimate and seriously gorgeous.
Outstanding academic programs include the sciences, a âgreat focusâ on the arts, a popular Japanese Studies Program, and âa highly acclaimed political science program.â
âSmall class sizes allow lots of discussion and personal attentionâ and undergraduate research opportunities allow students to work with faculty members on the kinds of projects reserved for grad students at most other schools. Willamette is also âvery accommodating for double majors.â Professors are, âfor the most part, super interesting and exciting.â
Intercollegiate and intramural sports are hugely popular here, and the âincredibly strongâ track and cross country programs are especially noteworthy.
Willamette is â2 hours from the coastâ and â2 hours from the mountains.â Also, âitâs only a 45-minute drive over to Portlandâ and âa ton of cultural stuff.â
Students at Willamette rate their âinteresting, intelligent, genuine, [and] community orientedâ peers as âpretty hard workersâ and say âThereâs a social group for almost everyone â jocks, preps, partiers, nerds; you name it.â There are also âoutdoorsyâ types and âa lot of musiciansâ here. Conflict between groups is very minimal. âEveryone is accepting . . . so itâs not intimidating to meet random people.â Politically, Willamette is âextremely liberal.â There are plenty of âpolitically left-wing people who love granola and Howard Dean,â though, interestingly, few âreal hippies.â

D is studying MAE at UAH. It has a great engineering school. Very well know in the aerospace industry. Offer all types of engineering degrees. Also have stand alone propulsion research center. Because of size, talented undergrad have the opportunity to perform research. Honors programs also available with special housing available if accepted into program.

The cost is relatively inexpensive, both in-state and out-of-start. (Out-of-state fees were slightly higher than fees at local in-state univ.) Very good merit scholarship program. Dorms are outstanding (4 person suite with separate bedroom for each student and 2 people sharing in-suite bathroom, frig. and microwave included in common room of suite, including freshman dorm). Housing cost was $2K cheaper than most universities.

Fantastic location with Redstone (Army) and Marshall (NASA) 10 minutes away. These government installations attract every aerospace contractor in the country (Lockheed, Boeing, USAA, etc) into the research park âacross the streetâ from the UAH campus.

Coop program offers large number of positions to get hands-on experience in the field (and make $$$) with 80-90% placement in the area so you donât have to move every 4 months.

Worth a look if you are interested in engineering. (Other degrees offered but this is the only one I am familiar with)
