Brag about your "lesser known" school!

To Report 298

Beaver COlege was unknown to me, and has some SNL or Lampoon issues:

The school was founded in Beaver, Pennsylvania in 1853. By 1872 it had attained collegiate status, under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was named Beaver College. In 1925 Beaver College moved east to Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. In 1928, the school acquired the current campus in Glenside. The college operated both the Jenkintown and Glenside campuses into the mid-1960’s, when it consolidated all activities onto the Glenside campus.

In July 2001, upon attaining university status, Beaver College officially changed its name to Arcadia University. It was thought that a new name would emphasize the school’s position as one of the top small institutions of higher learning on the East Coast, and would cement its change in designation from “college” to “university.” The decision was also made in part to shed its association with the former commonly derided name. As then-president Bette Landman noted:

“[The name] too often elicits ridicule in the form of derogatory remarks pertaining to the rodent, the TV show ‘Leave It to Beaver’ and the vulgar reference to the female anatomy.”

During the subsequent years, memorabilia from the former name became very popular for Arcadia students to give as gifts.

And its religious affiliation appears to be Espicopalian

The school was founded in Beaver, Pennsylvania in 1853. By 1872 it had attained collegiate status, under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

It also looks like a very neat place.

There must be two Beaver Colleges then. The one where my husband worked is still located in Beaver, Pennsylvania, is still called Beaver College and is affiliated with the Reformed Presbyterian Church…there is even a link on the denomination’s web page. (By the way, I did a bit more research into the beliefs of the RPC…they are a denomination that doesn’t use instruments in worship and sings only from the Psalms. I’m bringing this up because it is a very conservative school where Christian beliefs are very very important; some of those beliefs [e.g. not using instruments, not participating in the secular political process] might surprise even religous applicants who are members of more mainstream denominations.)

More on the Beav:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaver_Stadium

To designate the size for the number of schools is very time consuming and thankfully someone has taken the time to give you answers within a few clicks.

Using the data found on National Center for Education Statistics
website, you can see the enrollment sizes of all the universities
located in the United States.

<a href=“College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics”>College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics;

I’m sure that little Beaver College in Beaver Falls, PA would love that stadium…unfortunately, it’s not there.

Arcadia college is pretty well known here in Eastern PA. They have a cool first semester in England program for Freshman. I could not get my older kids interested in it, but I have hopes for number 3. My Grandmother attended it many, many years ago when it was Beaver College.

I think the PSU students and faculty would very much miss their stadium if it wasn’t in Happy Valley. :)

Canisius is a very smart, very small college, with a Jesuit intellectual foundation and urban location. Its teachers college, just one of its offerings, is admired throughout this region, even with the nearby Buffalo State and SUNY Buffalo turning out teachers all the time. ALso known for business and other departments. Unfortunately it appeared as a party school somewhere, and I don’t know what’s true. Its graduates are much admired and employable in this region. Anyway, it’s worth looking up Canisius College (Buffalo NY) on the web.

I’m the D of workingforblue and would like to correct the list. The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is not the same as the University of Alabama. While we are sister schools and share the same board of trustees, we are entirely different schools and a degree from one is not the same as a degree from the other.

Also, contrary to the administrations attempts to force the UAHuntsville “logo” onto campus the students are fighting for the current UAH logo, and if I ever see my father use UA-whatever again, we will have a looooooong chat as he knows my feelings on it.

I have twins. One is going to USAFA, the other is attending Howard Payne University. HPU is a small Southern Baptist Univ. in Brownwood, TX, approx 1500 students, student/teacher ratio of 12/1. The main draw for my d was the Gen MacArthur Freedom Academy. This is a political science honors program with a great rep. Many of their grads go onto prestigious grad programs.
Here’s the link, check it out.

Yabbut, Temple, Dickinson, and Louisville would not be considered “lesser known” in my opinion. I wonder what our criteria for “lesser knownitude” is?

I definitely would.

uhh…some of those schools are hardly small gems…I mean UMd and UMass…those are large state schools with over 20,000 students each and very well known

BU, Brandeis, UMass, Maryland, Tufts, Connecticut College, Reed shouldnt be there.

I think Lynn U in Boca Raton, Fl, qualifies as small, hidden gem. The Harid Conservatory is attached. Campus is lovely. The school is geared to the more average student, and offers small classes and lots of assistance with internships. in fields like hotel management, OT, PT, film, etc.

For those looking at small Catholic Colleges, Merrimack College in No. Andover, MA, and St Anselm in Manchester, NH are definitely worth a look.
