I hesitate to add Bennington College, as I do not want anymore competition for my S. One of the more eccentric schools. Dining is not only heavy vegan, but organic; open curriculum - student designs course of study in conjunction with faculty. Campus is isolated, but in a magical setting. Both my wife and I are profs.at LACS. We both concluded that if we could choose ANY school to attend, it would be Bennington.

Mercer is absolutely NOT a Baptist University any more. It chose to remove that affiliation sveral years ago.

I see that SMU and TCU are among the Tx “small gems”. Gems they might be but nothing small about them unless you are comparing them to Tx A&M or UT (Austin).

I need to add Queens to the list. It is a small school, under 1000 undergrads. My daughter did an overnight and that sealed the deal. The campus is small, but beautiful and it is minutes from Uptown Charlotte. The classes are small, with lots of individualized attention. If you are looking for a small school with lots to offer this it it! About 90% study aboard and 100% do internships. Charlotte is a great city for internships. My daughter is also receiving merit aid.

briansteffy,
I checked out Bennington (to be honest–looking for a nice school that would have flexible gpa for son…he’s got v. high SATs though).

I just wondered–most of the male students seem to major in dance, theater, etc. This is def. not son’s bag (likes computers, good math mind). Wondered if Bennington would be the totally wrong place, in light of that? Thanks for any thoughts!

Oh, I just fell in love with the Bennington view book that came in the mail. It’s still on my night table. And it even offers merit scholarships. But couldn’t talk my D into applying. The residences look exquisite. Each house designed by a significant architect. If nothing else I think the student would emerge after four years with exquisite taste. Maybe D2 . . .

Two lesser known schools, Bryant and Roger Williams in Rhode Island were recommended to my daughter. Anyone familiar with these schools?

Haven’t toured but have heard nothing but good about Carroll College in Helena Montana. Great pre-med acceptance rate, awsome dance program but really cooooolllllddddd winters.

Friend of mine from Cambridge is a Soph at Bryant and likes it a lot.

East Carolina University (Greenville NC), the third largest school in the UNC system, ECU has a broad range of majors with excellent programs in nursing, education, the arts and business. There is huge support for the football team from students, alumni and the town. Located in a town of 65,000 less than an hour off of I-95. A couple of famous actresses who attended ECU…Emily Proctor (CSI,Miami) and Sandra Bullock.

Taxicab. I have a friend who majored in accounting at Bryant. He raves about the school. There are three schools in this country, that I know of, that are stand alone schools for business, and all begin with “B:” Babson, Bentley, and Bryant. All of them are very good for most aspects of business since that is their mainstay.

Babson is probably the hardest to get into and is most well-known for entrepreneurship, although their other majors are supposedly quite good too. Babson has a reputed culture of being “cut throat” among its students.

Bentley, which is second toughest for admission among these, specializes in accounting and finance; although, like Babson, they do have other majors that are business related. Bentley also is known to be among the strongest in liberal arts among these three school. Not only does the school offer very decent offerings in liberal arts but kids can and do take their liberal arts courses at nearby Brandeis. Bentley does not seem to have the same “cut throat” reputation as Babson. Kids tend to be more helpful there, and the school tends to be more nurturing than that of Babson from what I can tell.

Third comes Bryant, which is the easiest to get into among the three schools noted above… I don’t know if they have any one or two majors that they specialize in,but it is an overall good school for most business majors.

Finally, I should note that both Bentley and Babson are in Mass while Bryant is in Rhode Island.

taxguy, Bryant isnt only business, although it’s predominantly business.

My son applied to Bryant 2 years ago. He was accpepted, but this school gave him the worst financial aid package (met need with ALL loans and maybe W/S?, but not a dime in grant $), and surprisingly did not offer him any merit aid. He was offered merit awards at much more competitive schools, as well as a couple of schools that are equally competitive. A peer from his hs the year before with a much weaker profile was offered merit money. It was disappointing, because our son did like Bryant a lot. Had he gotten a package that would have been affordable, I think that he very well might have chosen Bryant. My son was accepted at Bentley with a 1/3 tuition scholarship, but no additional financial aid (it was too expensive for us). Bentley is an incredible school! If one has the money, what an amazing place to spend 4-5 years!

Thanks for the info everyone. We will see what happens! My daughter applied to both Bryant and Bentley. When she tells people where she applied they look at her like she is talking a foreign language! I hope she gets money so she can go to one of them. Northeastmom, where did your son end up going?

Taxicab, I just sent a PM to you, detailing where my son applied and how it all turned out. Good luck to your D. We really liked both of those schools.

After wading through as many pages of this thread as I had time for, I didn’t see Hillsdale College in Hillsdale Michigan mentioned. It is a lovely, well-endowed, about 1300 student LAC. It’s facilities are amazing. They have an incredible athletic center, a new student center and dining hall, very strong core curriculum, dedicated professors, a strong network of alums and an amazing history of independent thinking. The cost is under $30,000 a year and close to 90% of students receive aid. Contrary to what some think, it is not religiously affiliated. It is not oppressively conservative, Faculty come from UC Berkeley as well as a variety of other excellent institutions and they encourage discussion with students. It has an excellent record for students either going on to graduate schools or getting jobs right out of college. My son was offered a very nice financial package and entrance into their honors program(which requires three additional essays). We visited and I thought it was wonderful as did my son. He would have been happy to attend but he received an unexpected financial offer from Notre Dame. We’re Catholic and the larger(about 8000) campus bowled him over. He’s happy there but I still wonder about some of the opportunities he would have had in an environment like Hillsdale. Anyway, check it out.

4mom4

Go to prior page to see list – it includes Hillsdale.

I started reading this chain since I thought it was so interesting. I wanted to compliment Friedokra in particular for some points made –

I have two kids in college right now, with another one starting to look at schools. My kids decided to go to state universities because of a perception that they offer a wider variety of experiences at a lower cost, and they’re looking ahead to borrowing money for grad school.

The older one is at a big-10 state university in the Newsweek top 50, but doesn’t particularly like it (just a number, professors have that “students come and go” attitude, the whole sports-drinking-etc. thing gets old, hard to stand-out among thousands…). My middle kid got into several very good public universities (Ohio State, Penn State, U-Pittsburgh) with ACTs in the 98th percentile, and chose the Honors College at SUNY Buffalo, a lower tier school. This kid absolutely LOVES college, and has a 4.0. The school isn’t as pretty and didn’t have name-brand sweatshirts in the bookstore, but my kid is being offered lots of opportunities, is enjoying classes and is really excited about his studies.

Some of his high school classmates with equivalent grades/activities/scores chose to go to well known schools, such as Notre Dame, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, etc. These former A students came home for Christmas stressed out (it was so HARD), saying they got 3.2-3.4 gpas because “our school is harder.”

When my kid was picking schools, a Doctor told him to pick the school where he’d do well and have lots of opportunities without going into a lot of debt, since a 4.0 plus a good MCAT/LSAT score would trump a 3.5 and the same MCAT/LSAT score from a “name” school. Hmmm.
