Brag about your "lesser known" school!

Lots of folks know that my favorite LAC is Hillsdale College. It is simply a wonderful school with tons of opportunities, excellent and involved faculty… all the accolades.

Here is something which happened to my son this past semester: He was walking back to his dorm, when along comes Victor Davis Hansen (author of Mexifornia, among other titles). VDH asks son a question about son’s political views on the problems in Middle East. They wound up drinking coffee for 4 hours at the local Starbucks and are now correspondants. He also met and corresponds with other well-known media types and politicos. Hard to think of another college where that could happen!

Great financial aid, wonderful facilities, decent sports, and as my son says, “Best looking girls on any campus.”

Remind me what CTCL 1 stands for.

Colleges that change lives, by Loren Pope, who missed lots of really great colleges that also change lives.

Lesser known to Americans perhaps are a lot of terrific Canadian universities, or for that matter, schools in Great Britain, France, and other parts of the world. Get beyond USNWR and American boundaries, and you will find tons of hidden gems! This could give your child not just a classroom education but world experience too.

I will tell you about just one: University of British Columbia [Welcome to the University of British Columbia - UBC.ca](http://www.ubc.ca/)

Great for students comfortable with a large campus providing tons of choice, from majors, to clubs, to types of students. Very highly regarded faculties in sciences, arts and business. A very international and diverse campus, with students and faculty from around the globe.

Located in Vancouver, it’s a short bus ride to downtown or the international airport (direct flights to numerous US cities, Europe & Asia). Yet it’s a self-contained campus, surrounded by 2000 acres of forest, and numerous beaches. It’s really beautiful, and very safe.

Tuition is about $17,000 per year.

I know this thread isn’t about numbers, but if you look at sources that rank both American and world universities (about 4000), Univ. of British Columbia is typically around the top 30. It is especially good if your goal is graduate or professional school as it’s well regarded as a research institution and known to those in American institutions.

Newsweek Magazine: The Global Top TenNewsweek Magazine ranked UBC 27th in its ranking of the World’s 50 Top Universities in its August 21, 2006 International edition. (NOTE: The Web version, unlike the print version of the rankings, fails to take ties into account and therefore places UBC incorrectly at 31st.)

UBC also ranked ninth among North American research universities as a “patent powerhouse” in a 2005 U.S. survey of the Life Sciences conducted by The Scientist; it was the only Canadian institution noted in the survey.

I don’t know if someone has mentioned Occidental, but I go there and Oxy is AMAZING! If it’s not under the 'Colleges That Change Lives", it should be!

^^^
Letscrashtheparty, Occidental is on the list (see post 340) but do feel free to provide details about what makes the school amazing.

Westmont College, Santa Barbara, CA.

We visited a lot of colleges, from the top colleges to lesser known colleges recommended by ISI’s Choosing the Right College. There were a few colleges that just impressed the socks off of us:

Hampden-Sydney
A gorgeous, very old (started by Patrick Henry and James Madison  men’s college in Virginia. We talked to several professors here and they were, without a doubt, the smartest, most enthusiastic, most engaged and interesting professors we talked to anywhere. Wow! Seriously, they made professors we talked to at some of the top 20s look like complete duds. Their admissions department has been the most personable and friendly we’ve dealt with anywhere, too. This is a real gem. We hear they have great financial aid, too! - And lots of schools with girls nearby :-)

Grove City College
This was an incredible surprise - a Christian college that was incredibly intellectual and academically rigorous. The professors we talked to were very, very engaged with their subjects and cutting edge in their thinking. The campus is beautiful and the kids were friendly and looked like the kind of people I’d want for friends. This, too, is a gem of a school. It is also one of the most affordable private colleges out there - total cost for tuition, room & board & laptop is less than $17,634!

This is a terrific thread!

MSU - Bottineau is a small 2-year campus in Bottineau, North Dakota. They offer many programs in the areas of Health, Forestry, Recreation, Technology, and so on. It is also a very affordable college. You can complete programs online or on-campus. Financial aid is also available for students. They are starting up a football team in Fall 2008. Check out MSU-Bottineau!

I see some of the schools my D visited are listed here. Is Randolph College in Lynchburg Randolph-Macon College per chance?

I am pretty sure she has narrowed her choice down to Lycoming (in Williamsport PA) or McDaniel (Westminister MD) but she also received very good merit offers from Juniata (listed), Lynchburg (listed) and RMC (listed I think) as well.

She likes the additional May-term offered at Lycoming (like many schools have a four week January or J-Term) which can also be used for study abroad, or early start to summer jobs and internships. We also used the Loren Pope book as a starting point.

My S researched and found Ithaca College in NY. We haven’t had the opportunity to visit, but all their correspondence has been very warm, and they seem to meet all of his requirements. They do rolling admissions, so he has gotten in with a substantial scholarship. Anyone know anymore about it?

Randolph College is what used to be Randolph Macon Womens College. Randolph Macon College is a different institution.

University of New England. I dont actually go there yet, but it’s small and has GREAT med/health courses

Thank you fireflyscout–I see that the college she visited is Randolph Macon College in Ashland VA–not Lynchburg. She did visit Lynchburg College, but nothing else in Lynchburg.

expatme post #352 - Ithaca College is very popular with applicants where I live (downstate NY); don’t know what your child’s stats are but I would be thrilled if my child was admitted with a “substantial scholarship”

Anyone see the thread about CC being elitist because only the most highly ranked schools are ever discussed? Guess they missed this thread.

My daughter goes to Rose Hulman and describes it “her dream school”. As for me I call it the parents dream school.

It was ranked 9 years in a roll #1 engineering school without
a Phd and now I know why.

The Prof really care no TAs, great campus, great students, with a high retention rate and grad rate. About 1800 students that are engineers.

I would describe Ithaca College as a good second tier liberal arts college that has a few strong masters and doctoral programs as well. It is well known for its programs in the arts (dance, theater, music, etc.) and it also has a very well regarded physical therapy program with an accelerated D.P.T. program available. It’s a fairly small school and the location is somewhat remote and VERY cold in the winter, although Ithaca is a nice college town and Cornell is nearby. The student body is largely caucasian and upper middle class – not a lot of diversity. It’s expensive, but the financial aid packages are generous.
