Brag about your "lesser known" school!

I am going to brag about Earlham College in Richmond Indiana. As an incoming transfer, I cannot really speak to the academics yet, but I can speak to the community and closeness of campus. When I went to visit, everyone came up and talked to me, and encouraged me to come to Earlham. When I did not have a swipe card to get back into the dorm to get my stuff, as I was leaving, the girl I asked to open the door, introduced herself, and told me she loved Earlham and I should come! The classes I sat in on were very intersting, and the campus was gorgeous even under 25 in of snow. ( Yes we were there during the blizzard). Admissions could not have been nicer and I really clicked with my admissions counselor. The horseback riding facilites are amazing and everyone was just so nice and welcoming.

How is BU - Boston University - a “lesser known university”???

“How is BU - Boston University - a “lesser known university”???”

I’ve always thought that BU didn’t have a lot of name recognition outside of New England (I got my MSCS from BU).

Elmira College A great little School in the southern Finger Lakes area of New York [Elmira College](http://www.elmira.edu/) Great hockey teams

khstitches,
I read your comment about Clark and just wondering - do you know how easy/difficult it is to get from Worcester to Boston via mass transit these days? thanks!

time for a bump!!!

Wofford College!

Hoping that there may be additional schools that could be added to this thread.

Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. D. is very happy after freshman year. Merit scholarships keep on adding, so we are happy also, paying less than for her HS.

Can’t remember if I added this. Wartburg College in Iowa. Great merit aid and great med school placement! Quaint small town but fifteen minutes away from larger city. Beautiful campus and super nice people!

Mills College!

This thread is incredible. My son has been pretty uninterested until I found several schools in this thread that I thought would be a good match. He actually was looking at websites and asking when we could visit…Yeah and thanks for the great ideas.

2nd Wofford College only one of 2 Phi Beta Kappa schools in state

UNLV –> University of Nevada - Las Vegas

We had experienced a large influx of students after our national championship in Basketball ('92), and now we are seeing it again, with a massive overhaul of our campus (Hundreds of Millions being spent on the Midtown UNLV project, with new academic centers, student facilities, and amazing landscaping).

Academically, it really is difficult to graduate from UNLV, definitely harder than SUNY Albany, where I did my undergrad. There MBA program, so far, seems to be very intense. (Also, boasting what I perceive, as someone in the business, as the best hospitality and tourism school in the nation)
Yes, there are plenty of opportunities to party (if your over 21 and have $$), but there are just as many opportunities to learn as well.

I have talked with professors, and there is going to be a big push in reducing the number of graduate students teaching classes, and recruiting more Ph D’s to come to UNLV to teach.

We are one more national championship away from great notoriety.

P.S. It is one of the cheapest universities in the country for in state tuition; especially graduate school!

Waded through all this to see if Carroll in Helena, Montana was mentioned. Post 329 I think.

Just to add to it, Carroll College is a solid, 1400 student LAC with good ratings regionally in USNews (“best…”). It is a small, Catholic diocesan school with a strong reputation regionally. Excellent pre-professional programs, especially in pre-med and law with a stong nursing program. Pre-med has super mentors and advisors and a high success rate for those wanting to go to medical school. A unique program is the “animal bonding” that many pre-vet folks take – sort of a “horse-whisperer” program. The engineering dual-degree program partners with other top schools with 3 years at Carroll (and a BA in Math) and 2 additional at Columbia, USC, Notre Dame and others for the engineering degree.

Students are about 60/40 Catholic/other. Student activities are all the classic, “Montana outdoors” things with world-class fishing, hiking, skiing (and boarding) only minutes away. “Cold winters” Historymom says! Sure, that’s what gets the great powder to ski in! But the summers are heaven, and spring and fall wonderful… and Yellowstone and Glacier are only a couple hours away (south and north, respectively). And, the NAIA sports teams are competitive – the football team won the national championship last year (for about the 5th time!) and was on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Students are from all over, but predominantly Oregon, Washington, California and, of course, Montana. The campus is modern, with well-equipped and new science/lab facilities. The classes are all taught by professors and they get to know the students. Graduates stress the lifetime friendships and the very positive, “life altering/changing” experience. Check out the scenery on the website and take a virtual tour at [Carroll College - carroll college virtual tour](http://www.carroll.edu/about/tour/)

Carroll is a school that definitely fits the theme of this great thread.

Thanks RaptorDad  I would also recommend taking a look at the live webcam link on the homepage [Carroll College - Helena, Montana – Welcome](http://www.carroll.edu). It shows that even though it gets chilly it is far from bleak on those winter days as the sun is shining most days even in the winter.

Also wanted to add that the human/animal bond program is the only one like it in the nation and directed by a UCD alum. The students enroll in either the equine or canine focus of the program. The K9 focused group raises a service dog from puppyhood. That has become a yardstick of sorts for my D who greets college spam w/ a jaded eye and a “Yeah, but do they give me a puppy?”

Son fell in love with Colorado College. After 4 years of taking rigorous courses and feeling constantly under pressure and behind the 8 ball for a paper due one day or a test another, he is truly looking forward to enjoying one course at a time and hopefully figuring out what he likes and doesn’t instead of scurrying to get the requirements done.

University of New Hampshire should be added to the list - it was mentioned in an early post on this thread but was not added. A very underrated state school, my D will be a sophomore there and is very happy. It has a small school feeling, my D has found professors to be very helpful and encouraging. Excellent honors program (my D is in Honors), lovely campus. Known as a party school which I think has clouded its reputation. It’s worth a second look for anyone interested in New England schools.

Humboldt State as well (was on earlier lists) in Arcata, CA
