Brag about your "lesser known" school!

hudsonvalley here you are http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/misc.php?do=showsmilies

Again, I am really sorry if I offended anyone. I just figured that if in my college knowledge deprived pre-CC life I had heard of it it couldn’t be lesser known. I was presumptuous. :o

I would think any colleges in the CC college section that has no discussion going would be considered a lesser known school. ;)

Good point. I failed to differentiate between “not known to the common masses” vs “not known on CC”. Big dif, I guess!

historymom – Thanks very much. Now, let’s give this a shot… :D

It only took me a thousand posts to learn how to use the emoticons, but it was a great was to celebrate my graduation to “Senior Member” status.

I don’t see it on the list - Meredith College in Raleigh. D was accepted with a Presidential Scholarship…she chose not to go but it was close. Lovely campus, the most friendly kids (womens college) and faculty we met anywhere, and very nice facilities. The academics were also very strong.

Although this is a bump, this is an alert to others to learn about these diamonds in the rough.

Yeah, I keep trying to get the mods to make this a sticky, but since one of them didn’t seem to come up with the idea, they don’t seem to think it is that important. I find it one of the more useful threads on CC

Catawba College in Salisbury, NC.

It seems to have everything our D wanted. Beautiful campus. Small classes. Very friendly students. Not snooty. A very personalized approach to education.

The current mayor of Charlotte graduated from Catawba as did a number of my kids’ high school teachers and school athletic trainers.

I’m also not much for the US News ranking system. But for what it’s worth, USN ranks Catawba College as the 3rd best baccalaureate college in NC (after High Point University and Lenoir-Rhyne University.) D was accepted at Lenoir-Rhyne and several other schools, but chose Catawba.

I still think all of the State U’s should be taken off the list, including the SUNY’s. Since 90% of the kids in those colleges are in-state, it doesn’t matter much that someone on the other side of the US is aware of them. Colorado State U, Wisconsin - are unknowns?? A list that names 25% of the colleges in the US is not really helpful, is it?

I took a summer program at Michigan Tech. The campus is beautiful and the nearby town was good, the students were friendly, and the classes were good. My view may be skewed because I am neither a student or prospective one there (not interested in tech fields), but I believe that it deserves to be on the list.

I disagree about taking off the state universities. Here in the west with the WUE, information about these schools is very helpful. WUE schools are all publics. A student in a WUE state very often is NOT aware of what these schools have to offer and including them on this thread, along with comments from those who have attended them, is very useful. Other states have similar reciprocity programs as well. I say leave them on.

kathiep, how about we say that the flagship state schools should be taken off? There are many unknown state schools like Michigan Tech for example

Michigan Tech is an excellent “under the radar” school. One has to like snow, and lots of it, however.

State universities are not “lesser known.” I think the comments have been suggesting that Big State Us be taken off…not all state publics, many of which are not well-known.

I agree that state flagships should probably be taken off, as they’re usually rather well known, but not other publics.
Also, idad, you’re definitely right about the snow- I visited in the summer and so didn’t experience it firsthand, but I heard about how bad it could get. The campus wasn’t that big for non-Forestry majors though, so that would help.

I’m surprised to see that the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA is not on this list. My D just graduated and loved it! She’ll be teaching English to students at an American school in Italy, in the fall, and has been accepted and has deferred enrollment for a graduate degree in Education at Columbia University, which she will begin when she returns from Italy. Most of her friends from Puget Sound are either employed or attending graduate school, unlike some of her HS friends who graduated from more prestigious schools. With her merit scholarship, she was able to receive an excellent education for just a little more than a UC would have cost.

I just think that any college that has more then 10,000 students or has a D-1 football team is not “lesser known”. I think many posters simply thought that if their school wasn’t on this list that it wasn’t special. Maybe there should be a list of wonderful mid-size schools.

Rowan University just announced plans for the opening of its new MD school. It will be one of the two MD schools in the state of New Jersey.
