Brag about your "lesser known" school!

I have a cousin who is entering his junior year at Denison, he completely loves it and i think it is a nicely hidden gem

His sisters(twins) are attending Wittenburg and Baldwin Wallace which are also just incredible schools…

My school list(rising senior) includes a few hidden gems like Union(NY) which i just adore and Smith. I know smith is super well known on CC and to most people, but my GC hasn’t even heard of it

This post is very helpful

Bumping this up with a new one that (I believe) truly qualifies as lesser-known.

Green Mountain College is a very small (~800 students), environmentally-focused liberal arts college. It’s in rural Vermont, meaning that there’s not much of a downtown, but the scenery is downright gorgeous. It’s liberal, it’s funky, it’s a little out there. It’s not the most selective due to it occupying a small niche, but as environmental consciousness spreads, it’s growing more so. If it sounds interesting to you or your kid despite/because of its location in the middle of nowhere, its minute size, and its environmental mission, it might be worth applying to.

My S2 is a rising junior at the University of Denver. He has had a great experience there. Right now is he is on a study abroad semester, an amazing deal. We pay DU one quarter’s tuition…they pay his tuition, room and airfare to and from his study abroad experience. All we are paying for this quarter is food and fun. He had his choice of dozens of programs and his study abroad advisor helped him choose exactly what He will be taking four classes granting 18 credits, all of which he has arranged to count toward his major and minor. He is enjoying his time there already (two weeks of orientation); his classes start monday.

I just discovered this one on this board actually: Mount Allison.

The top rated equivalent of an LAC in Canada. Only 2250 students, strong endowment, 140 clubs, gorgeous college town, ranked number 1 for 18 years by the Canadian national magazine equivalent to USNWR. More Rhodes Scholars than any other school!

Costs $13,000 a year for Americans to attend (and they have tons of merit aid).

Mount Allison: [Future Students - Mount Allison University](Undergraduate admissions | Mount Allison)

I was reading the website aloud to my daughter, and she’s going “can I go there?” “why can’t I go there!” “I want to go there!!”

Temple has both and I still think it qualifies.

Give me a break, that’s about 25% of the schools in the United States. This thread has gone from hidden gems to Name that School. Why not add Penn State? I bet someone hasn’t heard of it.

kathiep -

I think the real point here is that many, many parents, and many, many students focus on a rather narrow list of “famous name” colleges and universities. If we take a look at the list of schools that the CC “family” actually has attended, or currently work at, or have right next door, or whatever, we start to see a much bigger picture. As you put it a list of nearly 25% of the 4 year schools in the US. This is a really good thing! It is a reminder to all of us that there are great places everywhere. We don’t have to look far to find something not on the “famous name” list that is a really good choice for some students that we know and love.

My point is that this is just a list of names now. Because there are so many you can’t add just a few words describing them or flip through a page or two to read why they are unique. What would make them unique is if they are not known within their own state or even outside of say a three hour radius. I realize that I may know more names because I’ve been involved in the college search for several years now with three kids but c’mon, you won’t find anyone on the East Coast unaware of the University of Pittsburgh or Temple or Boston University. For someone unaware of these schools, reading a list of them isn’t going to make them say, “Oh! I’ve never heard of that - let me look it up!” Or maybe it will. I’ve said way more then my 2 cents worth.

Yes, you will, and since it’s my own school, I felt it was appropriate to add it. Maybe not many in PA, NJ, DE and NY have not heard of it, but elsewhere on the east coast, I’ve met enough people who havent. Also, another thing is that many who might’ve heard of Temple assume that we’re a private school.

I do agree that BU and Pitt are much more well known and probably should not be on here.

I happen to agree with Kathiep. Lesser known to me tend to be smaller schools. I guess that might be because they have less alumni to spread the word about their school! Is one more likely to recognize UNC-Charlotte, or Ohio Northern University? I think the smaller school is less well known.

That wasn’t the greatest example, as Charlotte isn’t too well known to begin with.

Well, it is the most populated city in the state of NC.

[THE City Of Charlotte .com - Your Best Local Resource - For Visitors](http://www.thecityofcharlotte.com/visitors.html)

UNC-Charlotte=Charlotte. No one calls it UNC-Charlotte other than administrators and the like. Students call it Charlotte.

Actually, almost any school that isn’t on CC’s list of top colleges, top LACs, and major universities qualifies in one region or another. American may be well known in the eastern part of the states but can be virtually unknown in areas of the PNW, SW, and Rocky Mountain areas. Meanwhile there are many colleges well know in southern CA than get little notice east of the Mississippi (Claremont colleges, USC, and Cal Tech aside). “Lesser known” has a regional connotation. This forum can provide additional information on schools found on CC’s alphabetical list. Now, if a school doesn’t even appear there, then it is really a “lesser known”.

Green Mountain College still isn’t on the list.
And I agree that the list is a bit all-encompassing now. Green Mountain and Michigan Tech qualify because I hadn’t heard of them (I’m from IL). But Boston U and Pitt are a bit much. They’re not exactly “lesser known”.

Let’s not throw out the baby with the bathwater! Yes, some on the list are questionable but, for me at least, most of these I have not heard of and might look into them briefly to see if they might match my younger daughter.

my cousin loves Wittenberg, and it’s not super well known.
Also, Point Park is lesser known and i have a couple of happy friend there for MT

Since I agree that this list has become unmanageable, I’m winnowing it down by my own perceptions (and also correcting some misspellings). For instance, if Boston University can be referred to as “BU” in a list of lesser-known schools, it’s certainly not lesser-known. State flagships were also removed unless very obscure (e.g. Montana and North Dakota). I’ve added UNC-Asheville, Green Mountain College, Point Park. Moved Miami of OH, NC State, Iowa State, and Kansas State back into the main list, as they are not flagships.
