Brag Sheet

I applied ED and just realized that I never mailed a brag sheet to JHU…

I know that I included all of my activities in the online application…therefore is it critical that I mail them a brag sheet? (it would just repeat everything that I said in the online app)

It might be a little redundant to send them something that’s already stated in your app. I ended up putting all that stuff on the Additional Information Section of the online app. However, most of it wasn’t mentioned in previous sections of the app.

My “Additional Information” section was really really long.

That kind of worried me…but I had to explain a lot of the stuff I included in the app…hopefully I didn’t overdo it…

I sent a pretty resume with everything about me summarized EC’s, awards, AP/Honors classes taken, GPA, ACT score, Rank, and a nice headshot of me in the corner…

I think it makes it easy for an admission rep to easily analyze you with something like this… as well it adds a human feel to it with the pic…

hmmmm…oh well…I think that it’s too late for me to send anything anyway…

That’s a good idea though astrife…

astrife, that’s exactly what they don’t want you to do. If youare going to send in a bragsheet, only attach an addendum for the extracurricular section. Follow the exact same outline as the one given on the app- it makes it a lot easier for adcoms to read it. They don’t like resumes

“awards, AP/Honors classes taken, GPA, ACT score, Rank, and a nice headshot of me” are not necessary and often annoy the adcoms because you are relisting stuff already on the application.

Plus do not EVER send a picture along with a resume (especially on a resume)- this is not even for colleges but also for the workplace as well. It makes the applicant look unprofessional. I know plenty of employers who just toss a resume into the trash because the person attached a photo

Well my GC recommended I do it that way… that’s why I did it… oh well…

Heh… I didn’t even want to send a resume but my GC basically forced me to

if i had significant accomplishments before high school, should i have put that in? like i performed carnegie hall like 6 times starting from age 10, but i only put that i did in 10th and 11th grade. i guess its too late for jhu…but for my other apps, should i?

dooit, i’m not sure where you are getting your information from but i think you are wrong. when i talked to an admissions person they strongly recommended sending an additional resume. and there are many colleges that specifically ask for a picture of the applicant. (although jhu admittedly is not one of them, i can’t see them being angry by getting to see what astrife looks like).

nanaijuh- if it was something that you’ve done continuingly than i think you should include that. however its stuff liked “joined brownies in 3rd grade”… that really has no merit.

I also included a picture of myself on the CD that I sent in for my $10 essay…I e-mailed JHU ahead of time and they said that “It is perfectly fine to send in a picture of yourself, if you choose to do so.”

As for the resume…I’ve been getting very different reactions from different people about that (as demonstrated by this thread)…could you please clear this up laxfan??

Also, is it too late for me to send in the brag sheet (I applied ED)…

i didn’t send one. i didn’t even know we could haha. it’s not like i have anything to put on the resume that’s different from what’s already on the app.

I didn’t understand how the “additional information” section worked, and I didn’t feel like burdening them with ectra-curricular activities that I didn’t participate in anymore, so I didn’t do it. Is that bad?

I don’t think that you HAD to put something in that “additional information…”

I just used it as a place to explain some of my EC’s that the adcom probably would have been clueless about had I not explained them…I actually think I may have put too much extra info…

i think i used that section wrong…haha. i put like i would be taking the SAT II’s in november and something else but i forgot.

I don’t think there is any WRONG way to use the “additional info” section…unless you write something like “I will kill myself if I don’t get into JHU…so please factor that into your decision…” haha

But I don’t think that any of us really misused it…

Now this is a good discussion – much better than does double-spacing matter!

I will start by saying to not listen to what “dooit” wrote – that might be true for other schools, but not at Hopkins. The “brag sheet” / “resume” / “extracurriculars list” / “additional info section” (whatever you want to call it) matters a lot at Hopkins and it is important that you present this information in a comprehensive way. The adcoms spend a lot of time evaluating this information as next to the transcript it is the second most important part of the application.

As far as design/content/which section you used/etc. – the adcoms don’t have any preferences. They just want it to be legible, understandable, informative, and useful. You can use the format on the applications, create your own format, attach something to the additional info section, send it a portfolio – however you want to present this extracurricular information.

And just to answer some other ? on this thread –

*typically the activities for your brag sheet should be stuff you did/do during your high school years - unless it is truly unique and special.

*there is no policy on pictures, but i know that the adcoms actually enjoy seeing the pictures. (((it will not give you an advantage or be a disadvantage)))

hope that helps.

Is it too late for me to send in a resume? I could send it by overnight mail…

(I applied ED)

Is it too late/too weird to send in a picture now? (I applied ED too)

I really don’t think that’s necessary. Though most likely it’d be received in time.

If you want to add anything to your ED file, the best way now is to email the information to your regional Admissions contact.
