Question: What do you think of the service provided by the Hiatt Career Center?

I visited Brandeis last year in March, and when a person in our tour group asked our guide “What do students dislike most about Brandeis?” she replied “THE CAREER CENTER DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED WE HATE IT!! (etc)” She, a senior, looked for jobs on her own after trying to work with the career advisers. She would not give sufficient detail as to why exactly students hate the center.

I understand this is one person’s opinion, but it is nonetheless concerning now that I am admitted and trying to decide where to go to school. What do current students/recent alumni think?

I’ll let the current/recent students comment on their own experiences, but you may find helpful the Princeton Review’s evaluation of the career center when it named Brandeis one of the Best Value Colleges for 2011:

“The Hiatt Career Center at Brandeis provides an extensive career coaching program, involving alumni, parents, and employers, culminating with a job shadowing program twice a year, in January and June. On-campus recruitment opportunities are robust, as well as opportunities through student job treks and career fairs in New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and Chicago. Financial support for internships is available through Brandeis’ World of Work Program, which provides $200,000 annually to fund internships. By graduation most Brandeis students have participated in at least two internships and have the experiences sought by top graduate schools and employers. And it shows: students have had a placement rate of approximately 95 percent within six months of graduation.” The full review is here:

To be honest, Hiatt has not been the greatest resource, that being said it’s changing a lot, they have A LOT of resources if you go there, they are great with helping with resumes and cover letters. They have these WoW (World of Work) programs they give you a large stipend when working nearly ANY unpaid internship. They do host multiple career fairs, and they are often sending out e-mails, nearly weekly, with internship updates and different programs. They’re really working on building up Hiatt since it is one of the most critical aspects of Brandeis. As a student I’ve just walked in their and instantly had an appointment with a career counselor who went through my whole resume and talked about potential careers choices. You get out what you’re willing to put in, Hiatt won’t hand you internships, but they will most definitely give you avenues to get them.

Thank you so much, Eliyahu! Another question - would you say that most students work with the Hiatt to plan for careers after they graduate? Or do they search for jobs on their own?
