Brave New World

This is going to happen faster than people realize. While many in the US are debating whether intelligence can even be measured, China has been dedicating significant resources to this field for a decade at least. I assume we are doing this in the US as well, under the radar.

This looks to be a potential spurious side effect of a piece of DNA that was trying to be altered in an attempt to prevent HIV and happens to be seen in mice learning research and stroke rehab. To jump to claim it may improve cognition seems to be a huge leap.

The CRISPR baby scandal has been an ongoing issue: https://www.wired.com/story/how-do-you-publish-the-work-of-a-scientific-villain/

An interesting article here, not specifically about the CRISPR twins: http://nautil.us/issue/18/genius/super_intelligent-humans-are-coming

The author is quite active in this field (as an adviser to the Chinese BGI, formerly the Beijing Genomics Institute).

Why don’t they simply grow a brain in a five gallon tank filled with goo and stick wires into it?

@droppedit, who says that isn’t being tried/done?

No brains with electrodes yet, but cell culture hamburger meat is currently being explored. :wink: When that replaces my steak, I will go vegetarian. ?

I guess we’re talking about science fiction now.

Much closer than a superbrain. :slight_smile:
