brazil- takes a downward turn (so sad)

brazil was on the fast track towards prosperity and modernization that was taking hold across it’s entire population… sadly it has had several set backs not just on the economic front. but the economy is in terrible shape. I hope brazil quickly bounces back, brazil has so much potential on so many fronts and the people, the cities and towns and the beauty of the amazon (and environmental importance) make it an awesome, fascinating country!

When I was in high school some years ago, I had a pen pal in Brazil, and I could never send him any gifts in the mail because it would never make it to him, their postal system was so corrupt. I was hoping the country was making steps towards prosperity, and am sad for the struggles the citizens have.

movemetoo…yes brazil was moving up the ladder quickly and modernizing on many fronts. i really hope it corrects it’s course!

A country that has the technical prowess and general competency to build passenger airplanes (i.e. Embraer), satellites, and rockets, is capable of doing anything, IMO. It is sad seeing countries like Brazil, and even Italy, struggle under the effects of systemic corruption.

We have a fairly large Brazilian population here in southern Florida and the Brazilians I have known are amazing people. One Brazilian friend of mine misses her family but loves it in the U.S. much more.

Former president Lula was taken in for questioning this morning and his home and office were searched, in a investigation of kick backs to politicians:

The bright side to Brazil’s mess is that the judicial system is now aggressively prosecuting corruption.

"The current president Dilma may also soon be impeached. She was on the board of Petrobras during that corruption scandal, but she claims to know nothing about it.

I can never grasp Portuguese . . . struggle enough with Spanish.

Portuguese sounds like Russian and French with some Spanish words tossed in.

Yes! I always thought Portuguese sounded more like a Slavic language than a Romance one!

The well-connected and the affluent of Brazil have always enjoyed the best assets of the country and have not been compelled to share prosperity with the public at large by the way of public works, infrastructure, etc. It’s the slum dwellers and other victims of the caste system that have had little chance to fulfill any aspirations. Even with the boom of the 21st century (is it over now?) grievous conditions persist.
