The number being tossed out that I’ve read is deferring pregnancy for 2 years after exposure. Not sure how sound the # is and whether further evidence will move it higher or lower. There is so much that isn’t understood currently.
The Zika virus can be spread by ANYONE who is bitten, develops symptoms, and then is bitten again by mosquitoes after they get back to their native country! It’s NOT just an issue for women traveling to infested areas. And there is NO cure or effective vaccine to prevent infection.
Any of the people traveling to Brazil for the Olympics could bring the virus back to the US.
And there are over 200,000 Americans planning on going.
Anyone want to imagine how fast this virus could spread across the whole country when those travelers return home and are bitten by pesky mosquitoes this summer?
THAT is the nightmare scenario that the World Health Organization is MOST worried about.
Until health organizations have a way of curing the outbreak of a this horrible virus. its my opinion that the Olympics should be cancelled.
I highly doubt olympics will be cancelled, but relocating it would be prudent – I doubt it will happen tho.
It is impossible to relocate the Games on such a short notice.
Damn. This winter was too mild for our mosquitoes to freeze over!
You may get you wish yet, @BunsenBurner. At least for my neck of the woods, Farmers Almanac predicted a mild start to winter, but cold temps and much snow come February. We’ll see if its right.
Fingers crossed. I hate the buggers, Zika or not. We are experiencing a major El Nino here in the PNW, so do not have my hopes high. It was nice to not have to deal with mosquitoes after one really cold winter when every body of water got covered with ice.
In New England here. We had a super tough winter last year, really cold and tons of snow. It was one of our worst summers for mosquitos, plentiful and huge! To much standing water come spring thaw, I guess.
A few airlines are now offering refunds to folks who bought tickets to fly to the affected areas…
