Breadth or depth, CC style

My schedule has room for two Community College courses next semester (senior). As I love math, one of these will most likely be a past-BC Cal course. For the other one, I would love to take another quantitative course (particularly Logic or maybe Linear Algebra). However, fear that this could leave me looking too technical and “nerdy.” Would college prefer passion for numbers and two quant. courses? Or a well-rounded student and one quant. with a softer complement?

Those classes sound awesome! I say take what you want. These two classes would really reflect your “passion for numbers” and it would leave you fairly advanced for a high school student. It really depends what college(s) you are applying to and majors you are interested in. Don’t know the rest of your schedule but maybe if you want to be more well-rounded, try new things this year in terms of activities and extra-curriculars? Maybe also consider this in terms of whether you will have time for both classes and will be able to remain focused/committed. I would add, don’t always make decisions in terms of what you think colleges are looking for but rather make them based upon your interests. Your sincerity will ring true in your application. Perhaps an essay could be about your passion for numbers and how that developed.

I agree that you should take what you want to take.

Personally, I think linear algebra and logic would be great. Formal Logic was one of my favorite college classes. Not overly quantitative, fairly easy, and just so damn logical that I just loved it. Contrapositives and stuff like that.

I have no idea if the logic class you’re considering would be like that. My point, though, is to take what you’d like. If colleges don’t like your choices, you probably don’t want those colleges anyway. You’ll be fine.

Good luck.
