Is this HDR?

it kind of bothers me how much that building doesn’t fit with the surrounding architecture.

It kind of bothers me that that building looks like a car wreck.

It kind of bothers me that it kind of bothers both of the posters above.

It just isn’t appealing to me and I really didn’t think the picture was remotely breathtaking.

it kind of bothers me that all you guys are bothered

pingpingpong, you cant expect anything less from some of these CC users. The Cooper Union architecture is somewhat reminiscent of MIT’s which is why I posted it up.

That building is pretty cool on the inside (I’m not a CU student), like really modern. It does stand out, especially compared to Cooper’s other buildings, some of which are a lot older.

what bothers me is that nyu and cooper are literally located 2 mins away from each other, and everytime nyu builds something new, the entire Village has a fit and there’s literally protests over how the new building doesn’t fit the “historic character” of the neighborhood, and everyone let this CU building slide. sure some people don’t like it, but no protests or arguments from the neighborhood council.
then again, CU doesn’t have a reputation for backstabbing and lying to the locals

this is a better pic imo: http://chronicle.com/images/photos/biz/blogPost/5377_cooper400x286.jpg
the building is smiling

Well you can’t compare NYU’s expansion to Cooper Union’s. NYU has immersed itself all over NYC so of course people would become angry if they ever wanted more land. Cooper Union, on the other hand, doesn’t have much so it is ok for them to slide.

The residents of Harlem protested against Columbia’s expansion in their neighborhood. Remember that?

I’m really curious as to knowing who is/are the architect(s) of CU because this building is just bizarre.

Heres a pic of MIT’s stata center
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wfm_stata_center.jpg

Hah I’m a resident of Morningside Heights (where Columbia is) and I have no problem with the expansion, they’re revamping a dead neighborhood. But I’m not a long-term resident so maybe that’s not for me to say. And NYU has done a lot for the area as well, plus its much bigger than Cooper so it needs the room.

The architects behind the building are Thom Mayne and his Santa Monica–based firm Morphosis (with Gruzen Samton) - it says it here: [Cooper Union - New Amsterdam Plein and Pavilion – New York Magazine Architecture Review](<a href=“Cooper Union - New Amsterdam Plein and Pavilion -- New York Magazine Architecture Review - Nymag”>Cooper Union - New Amsterdam Plein and Pavilion -- New York Magazine Architecture Review - Nymag)

the MIT building is neat but I like the new Cooper one more. haven’t seen the interior of the MIT one though. i’ve heard MIT has an ugly campus? never been up there.

“they’re revamping a dead neighborhood.”

Harlem is not necessarily dead. It’s actually a neighborhood filled with culture, festival, and rich history.

I’d have to say much of MIT’s campus appeals mostly to the tech-savvy and hardcore engineers. A person looking for traditional gothic, romanesque or beaux-arts style buildings wouldn’t find MIT’s architecture appealing.

Nice sky. Pity about the buildings.

I like it…

Yeah, but Columbia isn’t really in Harlem, it’s in Morningside Heights. like I said, I live there…it’s not a great neighborhood. Not that I want it to be gentrified either, just livened up - hey, I’m here for the cheap rent! :)

It could also use some interesting architecture, it’s pretty ugly.

The difference with Cooper Union is that it’s not an expansion; this building replaced an existing academic building. In fact, there will be even less space now because this building replaces two buildings and the square footage is lower than the other two combined.

Architecturally speaking, this is significantly better than the Hewitt Building that previously sat on the site, which was a gray rectangular 3 story concrete box.

Morningside heights is Columbia’s euphemism for saying “Please just don’t call it Harlem”
